How old is the Enterprise in STXI?

You are, I was reading one of your posts today and started laughing in my office. That was awkward.... *grins*

But don't listen to me, I'm alone in this god-forsaken village in the middle of nowhere.... and I'm drunk!

"Der Weltraum, unendliche Weiten, wir schreiben das Jahr 2200...." or something to that effect. uuu-uuuuuuuuuuuu-uuuuuuu

How come, that a Brit likes the German version of the intro? :)

The above question is largely dependent on whether or not Team Abrams has paid any attention to the speculative material in the Okudas' Star Trek Chronology or not. Based on Roddenberry's original thoughts about the Enterprise and Spock's comments in 'The Menagerie', the Okudas worked out the following timeline:

2245 - The Enterprise is launched under the command of Captain Robert April.

2250 - The end of the first 5YM. The ship undergoes its first refit.

2251 - Christopher Pike becomes captain of the Enterprise and embarks on a 5YM.

2256 - Pike's first 5YM comes to and end and the ship undergoes its second refit.

2257 - Second 5YM under Pike.

2261 - End of the second 5YM and the Enterprise undergoes a MAJOR refit.

2263 - Pike is promoted to Fleet Captain and James Kirk becomes captain of the Enterprise.

Since there are indications that certain aspects of canon may be altered, I'm wondering if the above, which really isn't canon (save for the fact that Pike was captain at least 13 years prior to the events of 'The Menagerie') is going to be tossed out in favor of the Enterprise being a totally new ship when Pike assumed command. So new in fact, that perhaps it hasn't really needed a refit at the time of the movie and when Kirk comes aboard.

And that's the part I'm wondering about: According to the Okudas' book, Kirk graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2254 and became captain nine years later. So does the movie show us Kirk in these two timeframes, or does he became a captain almost right out of the Academy? This doesn't seem likely, but it depends on how much liberty Orci and Kurtzman decided to take with Kirk's background.

U know, after reading this, I am not sure, well if you seen trailer, they seem to be building (constructing) new enterprise...I hope there is a good explanation to all that, I know JJ would like to stick to the cannon as much he can.... :)

It's never been established as canon, but I think that a number of fans, myself included, had always believed that the Big E was built in space, at the orbital shipyards above San Francisco (probably the facility depicted in STIII?)

In any event, it would be cool if a confirming fact is dropped somewhere in dialogue, but I suppose if it's not actually necessary to the story, then we won't get that. Still a lot of debate as to whether or not the teaser footage will find its way into the final cut of the film.

Lived in Germany for four years, and plan to go back next year for another ten months. This friend of mine owns the TOS dvds and we used to watch them together- in German! That was cool. I love the language, it's so logical!

Cool.
I haven't heard a German word out of the mouth of a Trek-character in years - DVDs be thanked :D

I only watch TOS in German, really, it's sort of a tradition now. I sometimes watch TNG in German too, I like it because they talk slowly and I understand nearly every word..... but I tried the German DS9 and it was horrible. Kira's voice is just really, really bad.

Well, I'm about to infuriate all you canon-lovers, but here's a thought. What if the Enterprise we see is a new ship and Pike commanded the previous Enterprise? Different registry number and everything. Bet some of you would freak out! Since this is a thinly disguised reboot, why not? I wouldn't mind. -- RR

While we won't know much of anything until the film premieres, I suspect that the Enterprise in Trek XI is relatively new - maybe a few years old, when Kirk takes over from Pike. I doubt it'll be 10-20 years old.

I'm beginning to think that myself. Something tells me that they're going to use this movie to establish Pike as the ship's first CO, and that the E is indeed, a fairly new vessel.

The 2245 date set by the Okudas is conjectural, so I suppose it's not grossly violating canon.

I suspect that we'll see tha handover from Pike to Kirk, but we won't see or hear anything relating to Lady E's age.

After all, it is not polite to talk about a lady's age. ;)
