As long as it's no more than we've seen previously, I couldn't care less. From the way the writers have been talking, tough it sounds like they may actually make the least continuty mistakes yet.
I think they can be respectful of Trek lore without having to adhere to every canon nitpick. If they can capture the spirit of Trek, which we frankly haven't seen on a regular basis for a long time, then I could give a shit about whether they "violate" the show's canon.
And let's not forget, there is plenty of precedent for Trek contradicting itself. TNG completely changed the nature of the Klingons. DS9 did the same for the Trill. Enterprise played havoc with a lot of fan assumptions about the early days of Starfleet. So it's not like it hasn't happened before.

I agree with Enterprise fans about continuity issues 100%. I didn't see a continuity issue with the Ferengi or the Borg. The Borg plot being turned into a paradox was actually kinda intelligent for Berman. But.......
Why MUST we have everything ever in Star Trek show up just because they can. Do we have to have Emony Dax in the movie just because we can? Do we have to meet some Cardassian poet who's name was spoken once just because it fits with canon? I mean c'mon... I CAN piss on a power outlet if I want to, but that would be absolutly rediculous.

Things from thee time period being absent are much less of an issue than things being present that shouldn't have been. Given that this movie will probably span, at most, a month, in-universe, its perfectly reasonable that no obscure people we know encountered members of the E crew during the period will turn up.
But, stick in a Ferengi, who really shouldn't be there, and it's an instant red flag.
For an analogy, imagine setting a film in London in 1599. This was the year Julius Caesar was first performed. But it's perfectly reasonable that this little "canon" (i.e. real life) factoid would never be mentioned in the film. But, if the film featured Issac Newton, who we know was not around at the time, that would be a major error.

Seriously. We've already had decades of canon and fans complaining about lack of canon, and I'm sick of it. I say to the producers...just go for it. Live up to the spirit of Trek and I'll be happy.
