Science fiction is primarily about ideas, the far flinging of the ideas is what separates it from most other genres. Lots of different kinds, and no single way to do it.
I like most varieties, but my favorite is less about the technology and the "science" and more about IDEAS. About how all these fantastic things impacting the people there. It's the people with which I expect more care in the craft. Writing convincing stories about people living in these settings.
And yes, I'm annoyed by technobabble, if it's there to just give the techno/science-fetishists a woody and doesn't really serve the story in anyway, or serves as a cheap explanation for something that didn't really need one (Voyager, I'm looking at YOU).
