... the startrek.com crew was let go because CBS is going to give Trek (and probably the site) a total facelift with the movie coming up.

I noticed this was 'effective immediately', and from my web-days that sometimes meant a fat security guy escourting you out of the building. Hmm.

CBS fired dozens of people friday...the startrek.com team were just a tiny portion of the total carnage at cbs interactive. It has nothing to do with the movie

Yeah.

Course it could be punishment for Star Trek Day at the WGA Strike.

Shall I send my Jem'hadar to "discuss" the situation with the AMPTP?

You're probably hoping Scully shows up instead of X.

How could the the old Startrek.com staff not give the site a reimagining? Why in the world would they have to fire them like they were retiring an old set of playing cards?

They wouldn't. Like Anthony said, it's likely just strictly dollars and cents that resulted in the shitcanning. Which is too bad, that place had a lot of charm for a corporate, official site.

Sorry, wasn't paying attention. I'll be there in a few minutes...

Per CBS's own press release,

http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-cbs...ns-to-expand-i/

Part of achieving this goal is reorganizing the way we do business to align the division’s workforce with our new vision, including increasing our operations in the Bay Area - the heart of so much of this activity.” Re the Bay Area expansion (not in the statement), CBS Interactive will be “moving certain of its employees to the Bay Area and possibly hiring more there as well.

I'll translate that report from corporate drone to human...

"we fired a load of people and called it a restructuring, thus balancing the books for the target set this quarter."

I'd fire the bosses myself. ;)

Given that CBS and Paramount have split into different corporate entities, I figure CBS just sees no reason to maintain the site as they aren't making any Trek currently and have nothing to do with the upcoming film.

They probably figure that they could get some cash by selling the domain to Paramount instead of giving the franchise free adverstising by maintaining a site for a defunct show.
