How many people do you know?

Jeez...well, I have lived in 5 states and 1 foreign country. In two of those states and the foreign country (for a total of about 13 years), I was in public accounting, a profession which requires one to 'make the rounds' of their client list of various businesses at least once a year for several days in each location while performing audits/reviews, and other client services. Additionally, public accounting is known for being a pretty brutal profession with a high level of turnover - particularly among 'baby staff' who might only make it a year or less before quitting or getting 'counseled out' by management. This translates to gobs and gobs of former co-workers.

So even if you just count professional contacts from only my public accounting days I have met and worked with thousands of people multiple times over a few years in most cases.

Add to that the crapload of people I met in 2 publicly traded companies as I worked internal audit (including work overseas in Europe and Asia) and we are talking several thousands of people.

These are people who would know me on the street, call me by name, and would know me enough to carry on a "So what have you been up to lately?/How's work?" sort of conversation.

I certainly do not remember all of these people's names any longer...but I once did as I interacted with them regularly.

And that's only my professional life.

It's no wonder I now suck with names.

Interesting question. We had like, 250 at the wedding? I knew all of them, and we had cut a lot of people out of course. I would say 1000 is the range of knowing people reasonably well, for me at least.

Let say that I'd have to be able to recognize them, know where they came from, a couple of tidbits, and especially about their families.

I'd say around a thousand, maybe upwards to two.

i used to work in a shop, so i easily met 40-50 people a day.

as for how many i know, probably at least a thousand that over 33 years i had some form of regular interaction with over a prolonged period.

how many friends? pffft, about 6. how many people did i share the company of outside of work/school/college? probably about 15 tops.

oh, and i have 40 Facebook friends. at least 5 of whom i've never even met in real life.

;)

That criteria might exclude some people you knew during childhood.

i remember that I had a friend called Erica when I was in grade 2. The only thing I really remember about her is that she had long, blonde hair that she wore in a single plait i don't remember her last name and certainly wouldn't recognise her today. Yet I know I considered her to be a really good friend. I would include her in the list of people I have known.

People i know in passing, or those that i would consider acquaintances? Probably thousands. People i would consider friends and know quite well? A few dozen to maybe 100.

It's 2012. The number of people you know is equal to the number of Facebook friends you have. :p

I found it interesting that you brought this up. I almost never log into FB from my computer, I usually check/post from my phone. But being the 'New Year', yesterday was the day to clean out the e-mail accounts and check the FB settings. Before logging out, I saw the "People You May Know" link on my page. For shits and giggles I clicked on it. I was almost floored. I keep my "friends" to pretty much the people I keep in frequent contact with, a few hundred. But if I "friended" everyone I actually know from that list, it would be well up over 1000.

Now as far as people I've known over almost 45 years? I'd have to put it around 4-5000 I would guess.
