How many newbies will last?

The afterworld is very nice. Comfy leather seats, commanders and captains to do our bidding, don't have to do much of anything. It's what we deserve after years of service.

Yikes. I just re-read my post and I agree, I took this way too seriously. Sorry all. I was in a fould mood the day I read this thread and I guess I was feeling tetchy*!

Apologies RoJoHen for snapping back at you, and thank you for your nice comments Australis and Praetor. :)

I like it here. I am going to stick around. And I won't be grumpy any more, scout's honour! Klingon's honour? Whatever.

*when I tell you it's because I saw someone stamp on a live rat, you'll understand. Especially as I own rats. :(

No worries - thanks for coming back to apologise, that shows you're one of the good guys (non-gender specific ;) )

We all have shitty days and this place is a good place to come and vent.

You saw someone stamp on a rat? As in, deliberately? Oh lord... that would make me twitchy for days.

I'm a noob. I admit it. But I am here to stay.
What brought me here was a combination of surfing Google images for pics of McCoy and the afterglow of watching "Search for Spock".

In which case, get thee hence to two threads - Hunk of the Week in the TV and Media forum and Karl Urban - blond or brunette in the Trek XI forum.

They don't disappoint :)

Have you considered the one you saw may have not been a pet?

Rats are major disease carrying pests. Especially in large cities. If you catch one in your home for example, releasing it outside is useless, because it'll just come right back into your apartment, or some other poor bastard's, to ransack their house, and leave excrement everywhere.

What do you suggest? Taking it to a vet to be put down? A quick stomp is just as fast a way to go. Carrying it in a box to be put down, would be an extended torture of the rodent, as it would be terrified the whole time, if it is unused to being carried.

Whether it was a sensible thing to do or not, it isn't going to have been a nice thing to see - especially for someone who does keep them as pets

^ You are right. Sorry you had to witness that, Braindeer. I guess the least they could have done was try not to subject unsuspecting passersby to such an ugly scene.

I take your point, An Officer, wild rats are disease ridden and often the quicker they are got rid of the better. I'd rather a quick stomp than, say, a glue trap, or poison, both of which are completely inhumane.

This particular rat was a) not in someone's house, and b) was subjected to torture prior to being trodden on. The person (a grown man...I say "man", I didn't see much humanity in him) was chasing it for quite some time, to the amusement of his friends. It was clearly terrified and didn't know where to run. He kicked it a few times. Eventually he stamped on it. Not on its head as an act of compassion. It was purely out of cruelty. He stomped on its abdomen, so it remained alive for several minutes. He then refused to put it out of its pain, and laughed at me when I told him what I thought of him.

That is why it was a particularly upsetting incident, especially as I keep rats as pets. :(
