How many newbies will last?

Well we seem to have drawn in some pretty good posters so I hope some of them stick around.

I found the BBS when I was searching for info on the newest Trek series, Enterprise. I lurked for quite a while before finally signing up for an account in 2001 and I'm still here!

Why all the newbie hate? :( Everyone reading this message was such a poster, at some point in the past. Even the highest-mighty Fleet Admiral and all that.
No hate. Just curiosity. It stands to reason that not all of these people will stick around.

True. At my forum we always get a good influx of new posters whenever a new show or movie comes out, and then I'd say more than half of them drop off after a few months when pretty much everything to be discussed has been. It's not any reflection on the people that leave, sometimes they get hooked in by the other non-Trek related forums on the board, and sometimes they don't.

It is nice having so much new blood right now though, and some of them are new to Trek altogether. I've never seen my email inbox filled up with so many notifications of new members joining as it has for Trek XI. If even a third of them stick around after six months, it will still be a good mix of new people to talk to.

You can see within the Trek XI forum that some of the new folk post their review in the review thread and nothing else, but others start replying to other threads within that forum. I don't know how many (if any) have started investigating the rest of the BBS, but I'd say those people who are active in a lot of the theads in Trek XI will probably stay awhile.

That is my guess. I see a lot of reviews from noobs and go, "Really? Another review thread?" and then I never read them. It's not that I don't want to read their opinion, but they could at least make an effort to post in one of the pre-existing threads.

The "noobs" really aren't behaving much differently to the veterans. There's still too many people insisting that the new movie is a failure, that they could have "saved" the script, finding ridiculous things to nitpick about.

The movie has been, so far, as successful as any Star Trek fan could possibly have dreamed it could be. It's a box office smash, the reviews are great and the movie itself wasn't the continuity smashing monster a lot of people feared it would be.

There are a couple of things, without spoiling, that people might find slightly objectionable but, quite frankly, I'm as fussy about continuity as anyone and I didn't have a problem.

Noobs and veterans alike can all agree that Star Trek is back.

Eh, I've started ignoring those posters. Not because I don't like debating the movie, but because so many of these people are determined to hate the movie no matter what anyone says, so the debates end up being pointless.

J Allen and I, amongst others, are hoping some of the anti-movie noobs will come and join our 'egalitarian' and 'civil' discussions down in TNZ.

I've noticed that, so i simply stay out of the XI forum.

Ah, TNZ...I'm so glad I don't even have to look at that place anymore. It was always way too angry.

Actually, our Trek XI discussion down there has been pretty civilised.

J and I just thought we needed some of the more... vociferous posters in TrekXI to come down and share their opinions, where we can discuss them in a frank and forthright manner.
