Riker beat up the Klingon first officer when he was on that Klingon ship. He could take Martok's wife.

Dude, Martok's wife was at Jadzia's party, not Worf's.

In real life, if you want a good job or a really nice husband/wife, both take sacrifice.

Riker wanted the best ship in the fleet and the woman he loved.

That's why he passed up those commands.

Have to agree that even though they took their sweet time getting together, Riker had to be in love with Troi the whole time. Nothing else makes sense.

Although nothing really explains why they didn't get together earlier, AND stay on the Enterprise. Or in fact leave as a pair like they did. They could have do that 10 years earlier.

Sadly the answer is the producers wanted to keep Riker and were not interested in having a pair of ships travelling around together

I always just thought that Riker stayed on board the Enterprise because he assumed that when Picard got promoted he would be handed the keys based on his performance with the Borg. It was the Enterprise that he wanted.

I would tend to agree. Doesn't he essentially state that at the end of GEN?
