How long is the filming of Star Trek XI supposed to take?

Has there been any mention about how long it will take them to film the movie or when the filming is scheduled to end?

Post production, Visual Effects, Scoring, Dialog replacement, foley...those will take some time after principle photography, not to mention reshoots, and all the behind the scenes crap I may have failed to mention.

Right, which takes them into the late Summer or Fall at least - then there's the question of what's the best time to release it to maximize the box office, rather than just throwing it out there on a random weekend. Christmas is a very big movie day in the U.S.

Well, July/August release wouldn't be impossible even with post-production, would it?

Just grumbling that's all.

Yeah, almost certainly. That's all of four or five months after principal photography wraps. Besides which, they'd be throwing it out in the middle of the Summer movie season - it'd get eaten alive.

A good movie would have a chance, I suppose.

It might or might not. It wouldn't have its best chance in the middle of the most competitive movie season.
Among other things, this one has to overcome the considerable disadvantage of being "another Star Trek movie." The studio's going to have to market the Hell out of it, and there's no good reason to throw it into the shark tank.

Re: How long is the filming of Star Trek XI supposed to take

So even if the actors strike in June, it won't affect this film?

Re: How long is the filming of Star Trek XI supposed to take

~ PR central ~

Paramount : How are we going to market this one ?
CBS : How about everything old is new again ?
Paramount : It's been done....

They'll need at least 3 months of CBS & Paramount argueing over how to market the film, so everything will be on time for the Xmas 2008 release....

Not necessarily. There are good movies that don't do well at the box office. One of my favorite movies this summer was Stardust (Aug. 10) and it only brought in $38.4 million, but it got a 75% rating on rottentomatoes, which is better than what big summer blockbusters like Spiderman 3 and PotC3 got, but those made all the money.

And my favorite movie the year was Hot Fuzz (April 20 - yes, before the summer but bear with me) and it only brought in $23.6 million, yet is one of the funniest movies of the year, and got 89% on rottentomatoes, one of the best reviewed movies of this year!

Quality filmmaking doesn't always translate into money. Unfortunately, it all comes down to what's "hip and cool" and what's the flashiest piece of merchandise that can be put onto the screen, as opposed to what can be put on that has some substance.

I hope Star Trek can not only deliver on the money goods, but also on the entertainment and actually be a good movie. In the end, I'd rather it be a good movie, but I know that if it doesn't make enough money, Trek could go away for a long time, regardless of how good a movie it is.

I hope they take their time filming. I want this movie to run at least two hours. I always feel cheated when a movie runs under about 120 minutes.

Yeah, almost certainly. That's all of four or five months after principal photography wraps.

ILM pulled off a three month post-production period on Spielberg's WOTW and got a Best Visual Effects nomination for their work, so it's not impossible.

Besides which, they'd be throwing it out in the middle of the Summer movie season - it'd get eaten alive.

Depends. If it's as action-oriented as some of the rumors have suggested, and if marketing played that angle for all it was worth, the film might do fine.

Nominations are nice things.

How many shots, and what elements were involved? When did they actually begin work?

I'm not sure about the actual number of shots, but there were quite a few--at least 600-700, I would say. They involved everything from set extension to character animation and integration into a live background plates to full-on all-CGI shots. There's extensive bonus features on the two-disk DVD set which talk about it in detail.

Post-production actually got started before principal photography was finished, and CG tests were begun even before principal photography was started, so they did manage to squeeze more working time in that way. Mind you I'm not advocating this for Trek XI, since by all accounts the production process for WOTW was a nightmare, with ST:TMP-like studio restrictions on release dates and the like. I was just pointing out that it would, technically, be possible to have Trek XI ready for release in some form by summer. But if they want to take their time and get it right, more power to them.

I agree. I remember reading somewhere around when Nemesis was released that Berman (I think) wanted TREK films to be under 100 minutes. Although in that case, 100 minutes was too much
