Well I'm now entering day FIVE of being dead sick, and I'm $*$*ing hating it!!! While up till now it's just been running nose and general crappiness, this morning I woke up with a bone-dry sore throat as well. What's even more insane is since I'm laid off I'm just sitting at home resting and napping, yet every day I get WORSE! I remember back in high school when I got sick it would basically only last a single day with a second day of "recuperating", yet ever since college I will routinely be sick for upwards of a week. Why....? This is the also the first time in years I've had the "so weak I can't even get out of bed" symptom, usually it's just the sore throat and runny nose.

How many days are you usually sick for?

I seem to get a lot of short colds that last two or three days. The longest I've ever been off sick was when I got a bad case of the flu a few years ago.

I came in to work one day and gradually lost my voice during the day, then I was off for four days. I came back to work for one day and then had to stay at home again for another four days.

This question is flawed. What if i'm sick with flu one day but sick with measles another day? obviously the length of time of being sick is going to be different. I might get rid of my cold within 2 days but the measles could take me over a week.

SO what poll option do I choose? please explain.

I should have also said that a lot of people at my company have gotten in to the bad habit of working from home when they are sick. If you're sick, you're sick, if you're not, you're not.

I've only had a cold once in the last 2 years, and I fought it off in about 3 days, although it took most of the office out for a couple of weeks.

You know what the OP means.

When you travel somewhere by car and stop for the night, does that mean the next day another trip begins, or are you still on the same trip? I mean you did stop. So it's technically two trips, right? One to the spot where you spent the night, and another to your destination that next day.

Oh, and within the subject at hand, what if you caught the measles while you had the flu? Then the flu goes away and you still have the measles? How do we quantify that? What if the flu comes back before you're over the measles?

There are thousands of ways to split hairs, after all.

Well, working at home is better than coming in to work while sick. But I'd tend to agree that sometimes the best remedy for being sick is to just let yourelf be sick.

It has a dual effect.

Sometimes people who feel a little bit ill but not enough to stay home will work from home instead, but they don't do nearly as much as they would at work.

On the other hand, others won't take any time off sick at all and will just work through it by staying at home at the cost of their own health.

That's not even the same thing AT ALL. I didn't say anything about having the flu then immediately having the measles to immediately have the flu again.

I want a definition of sick. :vulcan:

If the OP by sick only means to have the cold or flu then the OP should have said, "how long do you have the cold/flu for".

I guess I misread you. My mistake. But you don't really need a definition of sick. I'd say since the OP used the word ususally, we could surmise that means staying sick at once "on average" regardless of the type of sickness. So, I'd go with the median amount of time I may stay sick at once.
Say someone had the flu four times last year, and it lasted 5, 7, 6, and 8 days each. But the person also had a dose of the clap that lasted 21 days. Obviously, that throws off the mean number of days the person stayed sick. So in this case my answer would be this person stays sick for seven days, on average. ;)

It's pretty obvious from the post that accompanies the poll that the OP is asking how long a cold usually lasts for Tacky, stop being difficult.

A cold or the flu will generally knock me out for five or six days. I don't recover as fast as I did when I was in my 20's or 30's.

If I've had the unfortunate luck of catching a flu, I'm down for the count for at least a week. Simple colds don't really stop me going about my usual business.

At one point in my life, when I was under a lot of stress, I had an ordinary cough, which turned into a throat infection, and then stuck around keeping me up through the night for weeks - all because I couldn't be arsed to get to my doctor - stress is the very worst thing when you're sick. :-/

ok, I usually have the cold or flu for about 2 days meaning my headache, sore throat and sneezing etc are over within 2 days............however............ I suffer all year round with a nasal problem which the cold tends to make worse. So although my cold is over with in about 2 days I have above usual nasal problems that can last for about 2 weeks.

If I'm going to get sick, it will probably be a 24-48 hour bug. It's rare for me to be sick longer than that (but it has happened).

usaully i'm sick for a coule of days at the most but five years ago my blood pressure drop thruogh the floor and i was stuck in hospital for a week then off work for a further two weeks strange thing was it hasn't happened again and the docs weren't sure what caused it

Last month, I got sick for the first time in 3 years. I guess either it was a strong bug or since I hadn't been sick for so long it fucked me hard for 2 full weeks. It turned developed into pink eye (first time i've had it in my life) and ear infections. Even with antibiotics it took me over 2 weeks before I was in good health again.

It really fuckin sucked.

I'm not sick often enough to have really established any sort of pattern to it. Last time I was sick enough to notice was maybe 2004 or 2005 and I guess it lasted about a week?

For those of you who hardly ever get sick (by which I refer to the common cold), I commend you and hope you appreciate how good you have it ;)
