How is watching Renee at a gala going to ensure her mental state?

Simply turning up doesn't guarantee her depression won't stop her from bailing out, I can see one of the crew telling her the full story about where they're from and the importance, as happens in most time travel plots.

I can only speak for myself but when you’re in a certain fragile frame of mind even the slightest bad OR good thing that happens to you or is said to you can have major consequences for the entire trajectory of your emotional state. A few nice words from a charming and dashing older bald dude can therefore work wonders. (I’m still speaking from experience... ahem.)

I assumed a big part was watching out for Q, who is apparently impersonating her therapist.

Would be odd for her therapist to be invited... oh wait, the crew were able to get in. I guess if he can still manipulate computers, he can get in. I think I know why we have Picard knocked out on the floor in the teaser, Q hit him again!

I assumed that they think she'll go ahead with it (as she did in the unaltered timeline) unless there's an additional intervention by Q, and they are there to stop that.

Exactly. Not to mention, as an employee of the space agency, he could easily be invited to the gala anyway. Or if he wasn't invited specifically, I'm sure he could easily arrange to be the Plus One of someone who was.

Maybe there are multiple people at the gala to watch over her because there could potentially be multiple threats to Renee? No one knows how Q will attempt his assassination or even if he has recruited accomplices.

Or maybe everyone has got Q wrong? Maybe he is actually trying to cure Renee’s depression caused by her fear of the space flight (she might be having premonitions)? Perhaps the space flight ended in disaster in the Confederation timeline with the death of Renee and Q is trying to save her from this ultimate doom?

I'm thinking Renee Picard actually isn't supposed to go, that some of our heroes memories are bit wonky because of the time in the Confederation timeline. If she goes, then the Confederation timeline wins out.

Picard mentioned Renée as an important figure in the exploration of the solar system in the SFA speech in The Star Gazer, before the timeline was altered.

I missed that. But it could still be that she isn't supposed to be on this particular mission?

Yeah, Q probably can still pop in and out of places. Though if not it would've been funny to see him on public transit/taking a cab, etc. Or sitting in a library grumbling about 2024 technology.

Forcing someone to go through something she may not honestly feel ready for seems kind of the opposite of any sort of humane society. I'm wondering if Picard forcing her into the flight in fact causes the evil future rather than prevents it.

Maybe that will give us some more time in the Confederation, like Picard found himself in the future where he didn't get stabbed in Tapestry. Then Q will come in and he'll decide not to force her. Only Q probably can't do that atm...

Perhaps flying later makes her miss the opportunity to stop by Io as well, she only goes to Europa, and the new lifeform isn't found

Maybe I missed something, but as I understood it, our heroes contemplated simply knocking her out (i.e. giving her a mild sedative or something) until the start of the mission, so she wouldn't be deterred from going. However, she is expected to go to the gala, and it would raise all sorts of questions if she didn't. They don't have a choice but to let her go. All they can do is watch over her and try to make sure that nobody unduly influences her (or maybe they'll even actively encourage her).
