Shipping just means enjoying the idea of two characters together as a romantic couple, whether they actually were a couple on screen or not. Here are some examples of how the word can be used:

J'Rulz ships J/C. (Janeway and Chakotay)
A lot of people ship J/7. (Janeway and Seven)
Not too many people claim C/7 as their favorite ship.
I recently started shipping the "other J/C" (Janeway and Crusher)
P/T is a canon ship. (Paris/Torres)

thank you both Must make me seem naif, but this is first time on any trek site (apart from my very male-oriented/techy BCC site) and genuinely never encountered expression before. And google didn't help much.

I had high hopes of the J/C ship, but guess that was doomed. And J/Tuvok was never going to happen. I didn't warm to any of the subsequent guest 'love interests'. Felt not worthy of her. Apart from maybe Q.
