To refresh this thread, I think some people should really get this book:
The Gridlock Economy (by Michael Heller)
"How Too Much Ownership Wrecks Markets, Stops Innovation, and Costs Lives"
This book demonstrates how too much copyright and patenting is highly detrimental to the Greater Good, and how even companies jealously guarding their intellectual property ultimately fuck themselves by fucking everybody else. I mean nobody is making a profit from The Wonders Years, are they?
IP protection can cause more direct harm than something as incredibly infuriating but non physically harmful like overweening music copyright blocking other forms of entertainment, but something as viciously wicked as outright blocking vital medical treatments due to convoluted patents.
