Spoilers How far in the future? (Temporal Edict)

The Wormhole

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
So, Temporal Edict ends in "the far future" where Boimler is still remembered for drafting a regulation allowing Starfleet officers to slack off and Chief O'Brien is remembered as Starfleet's greatest hero (as well he should).

So, anyone care to speculate on how far in the future this scene takes place? Same era as Relativity and its crew? Mr. Daniels's era? Some point relative to Disco's third season, or even circa Calypso (assuming that's even later than Disco season 3)? Some further point in the future altogether?

Let's have fun with this discussion.

I would kind of love for the O'Brien thing to continue as a background gag in future seasons of Discovery. Never directly addressed, but maybe somebody in the future mentions a "Chief O'Brien Day" or we see a crumbled O'Brien statue in the background of some old Federation colony.

I think the gag has more to do with priming us for Discovery rather than giving us a preview of season 3. It is encouraging us to ponder what the more distant future might be like and how the Federation will be remembered.

Major Grin on YouTube has picked up on the visual similarities between that future scene and a scene from “Serenity”. I wonder if that was somehow done on purpose as a nod to the Firefly 'verse or if someone in the art direction just googled “future classroom” and landed on a screenshot from “Serenity”.

I'm almost 50, looking at that makes my knees hurt.

Kneeling has been present in classrooms long before Firefly. It could be an homage, but I am sure that Major Grin is suggesting more of a theft than a creative choice.

I don't know what he's suggesting, but I find the similarities uncanny. It's not only the kneeling of the pupils but also the shape of the desks and the general mood and lighting of the scene. Personally I'm leaning toward it being a subtle nod to “Serenity”. Wouldn't surprise me to learn people in the art department are fans of other sci-fi stuff. :)
