How exactly did the Borg gain control?

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
In First Contact how do you suppose the Borg managed to so easily take control of almost half a dozen decks in the space of a few hours without anyone knowing until it was to late? I mean although it's never been mentioned on screen there is supposedly nearly 800 crew on the Enterprise and as they were just coming out of a battle situation, the entire crew should have been roaming about doing repairs and whatever else needed done, especially on the Engineering decks where they should've been nearly 200 crew alone on those decks. I mean how many Borg came across anyway, a dozen, two dozen, a hundred? Somehow even if Comms were down I still think a message could have been sent to the Bridge at the first moment of seeing the Borg.

Anyone else think so or was there to it?

It would seem that the Borg for this rare once had some sort of a plan.

They are first spotted in an obscure Jeffries tube near Main Engineering, not encountered as they openly march towards the bridge behind their impermeable personal shields. It wouldn't be impossible for them to have sabotaged key systems in preparation for an attack - say, cut off communications, shut down alarms, prevent isolation forcefields from activating where the Borg roam yet raise them where the crew might wish to respond. That would even out the numbers a bit.

(I wonder how long it takes to turn an assimilee into another Drone after the first injection... Minutes? Hours?)

It's been ages since I've since this - does Hawke turn in minutes?

As I recall, a Borg grabs Hawke and they disappear from the camera. Probably only a couple of minutes go by, then as Picard is about to turn the last valve or lever thingy for the deflector dish, Hawke shows up. His face is pasty white and he has one of those borg star shaped things on his cheek.

Don't forget Ensign "Captain...Help...Please". He seems to get assimilated pretty quickly.

They took control of one deck, deck 16 - which was sparsely populated as a large group of engineering personnel had gone with Geordi.

It was after the Fed attempt to get to engineering that they took over the other decks, from 26-11 as quoted by the security guy.

It probably also helped that they first assimilated Lt. Porter, who was in command of Engineering at the time.

...and his red-headed assistant. I believe they were on only Deck 16, the engineering deck, and one deck certainly wasn't half the ship. Not on a ship that has 24, er 26...I mean 29 decks...

Yeah, the redheaded assistant who broke the rule of horror movies. Never go somewhere when it's deadly silent.
