I mentioned this elsewhere, but comments from Alex Kurtzman indicate that the show INTENTIONALLY mimics/mirrors "The Cage" vs "Where No Man Has Gone Before" from TOS and "The Gathering" vs "Midnight on the Firing Line" from Babylon 5, with the first two episodes being the equivalent of "The Cage"/"The Gathering" and "Context is for Kings" being the equivalent of "Where No Man Has Gone Before"/"Midnight on the Firing Line".

I watched the first two series out of sequence so its difficult to judge them on a basis of first impressions.

TNG I watched on BBC after already seeing some of series one. I didn't feel I'd missed much.

Emissary though, I'd begged for money to rent this from Village Video. I only watched it once.

Voyager, I'd planned to buy the whole series on VHS, but I cooled off the idea after watching The Caretaker.

Broken Bow, I waited with anticipation, expecting great things. It was the first series launch of the internet age, and so much was promised. Pfft.

ST09. I was so determined not to be a hater, i hated the haters. I mean, what are they like? But red matter and breweries, lens flare and super sized starships. Come off it.

But Discovery? I kept myself spoiler free, not that there's been much to go on, but to be honest, my faith in watchable star trek had long since waned, and I doubted it could be made to work. So, I watched expecting the same disappointment, but no, not this time. Those freaky looking Klingons, maybe I'll just go and refamiliarise myself with the legend of Kahless and Morath or whoever. Star Trek got good.

That said, I was following Point Pleasant, and Tru Calling, and Bionic Woman, and Firefly...

None of the pilots were really very good, including this one. They all range from just barely watchable to horrid as far as I'm concerned. Fortunately all the shows ended up better than their pilots.

I'll let you know once I've seen the actual pilot next week. These two episodes were more like a prelude. Only two of the main characters were introduced and the hero ship wasn't even mentioned.

Yes, we have seen "The Cage". Now we have to wait for "Where No Man Has Gone Before".

1) TOS - "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (Yep, still my favorite Pilot)

2) ST: D - "The Vulcan Hello"+ "Battle At The Binary Star"

3) "The Cage" (Unsold first TOS Pilot)

4) TAS - "Beyond The Farthest Star"

5) ENT - "Broken Bow"

6) DS9 - "The Emissary"

7) VOY - "Caretaker" (and yeah, I still haven't seen all of that series - quit at VOY - "The 37's"; but I still thought it had potential in the Pilot.)

8) TNG - "Encounter At Farpoint" <--- Yeah, overall I do like TNG better than VOY - but TNG's pilot (and most of it's first season) was crap if I'm being honest. In fact a number of the same people I watch the TNG pilot in 1987 were with me tonite watching ST: D; and we all enjoyed the ST: D pilot and are getting together again next week to continue watching. The reaction to TNG in 1987 was: And I recall it because we were all of the same opinion -"They had years to develop this, and this pilot was the best they could do?"

Agree with your TNG comment, have a Iook at 6:54 mark. Satisfaction! LMAO.

So imitating troubled production and last minute recasts is now the way for creativity? :-).

The 2 different pilot concept was done by STD to set up Michael Burham as the gateway character that we are supposed to care about.

So far that gamble is failing IMO. Burham isn't very likeable and falls flat as a series lead. I think audiences will be turned off once the novelty of the flashy 10 Mil special effects wears away.

Whilst I hated the Emissary when it first aired in the UK, and continued to dislike DS9 for some time. However, when watching it again some years later, I found it holds up as pretty good.
