How do you think they will/might do a spin-off from "Orville?"

Now that's it been established as a hit right out of the gate it does make you start thinking down the line. How would one spin-off something that is a clear love letter to TNG. The answer seems clear and that is to do a love letter to something else you might love but is also in the same "universe." Let's say McFarlande loves "Batman."

Maybe on future earth you have a place called Gothic city and you have a superhero and sidekick who goes by the name of Batmale and Blue Jay who travel around in a fixed up space car called the nightmobile. They fight against a evil mime or a guy called the "Dolphin" or "Pun Man" or "Lionwoman." Always carrying around a trusty backpack filled with all sorts of crime fighting tools.

We also know he likes "Back to the Future" so how about a teenage girl goes back to the 80's and has make sure her great, great grandparents fall in love because a future offspring will be a key figure in making space travel a possibility. Basically the options seem kind of endless.

I think it's a bit early to start speculating on spin-offs, even for shits and giggles. The ratings for the first episode may have been good, but the press hasn't been, even if the audiences seemed to have enjoyed it.

I wonder, if the show goes on for a few years, if they'll keep this ensemble together or swap in new actors and characters.

To fit with the show's meta Star Trek thing, the spin-off is set on a Union space station. Also, a minor background character on Orville is part of the show's main cast.

In this day and age when ever move or show is seen as a potential franchise I wouldn't say it's to early to start thinking about these things. Well it might be but it doesn't mean it won't be done. You got movie sequels aproved these days even before the first movie even comes out.

As for the meta Star Trek thing I also thought of that as well but I think they would try and combine DS9 with Voyager because i'm not sure either is popular enough to sustain it's own parody. Maybe a space station like DS9 but a woman captain like in Voyager, maybe even the current first officer getting the command. The Blob guy could also be a node to either O'Brien or Odo.

"TOS" also makes sense but "Galaxy Quest" kind of did that and another spaceship show so soon would seem to be to similiar to "Orville."

There is no need to haphazardly spin-off before the basic universe is rich enough to sustain playing in another corner of it.
If the series is successful, then they're going to focus on all the possible stories that can be told with the primary series.

Stargate is a good example.

But what I'd be pining over would be novels, comics, games, and a model ECV-197.

Just think! If the show takes of and we get a franchise we get to start talking about what is canon.:) Allura's eyebrows or lack of them, depending on the two different looks is already are first canon issue. Years from now when they do the prequels we will be arguing over whether or not her species should have eyebrows or not in the prequel.

OMG totally didn't notice!

I didn't either until someone mentioned and showed a pic in one of the review threads about the pilot. I got to say I prefer the no eyebrow look. In the pic she has to bright of lipstick and I don't like the idea of them trying to make a character more sexy, especially when she looked fine in her pilot episode look.

Obviously, an all-serious and super-dark spinoff is the way to go.

It can still have jokes but darker more edgy jokes instead. For example a ensign has been missing for a few days and nobody knows where he went. Space police pull over the ship and it turns out he has been dangling from the space cord he use to tether himself to the ship during several warp jumps. All that is left now is a few torn rags that was once the ensigns spacesuit. Wouldn't you know it this was also the week that the ensigns frail old grandmother had come aboard to visit him and has a terrible heart condition. Hilarity follows as the captain tries to find away to break the bad news to her.

I just take it a step at a time. It is too early to talk about anything other than what kind of audience dropoff we'll see this week.

Now that's it been established as a hit right out of the gate ...
When did that happen? It aired one episode and while the ratings were decent it had football as a lead in which will not be a thing after episode 2, it still has the potential to crash and burn in the first season.

I got a good feeling it's going to be a hit. I know it had football as a lead in but it also has Seth MacFarlane and a premise that you would think would keep many people from watching it since space opera's always have problems with winning over fans.

We'll see who the first to Tasha Yar it is.

Personally, I think it needs a couple more cast members (where's the main engineer?) and two of them need re-casting.
