How do you name alien characters/species?

I didn't put two and two together. Sorry. I'm not well versed in sci-fi beyond ST.

EDIT: I did like Krista McGee's Anomaly series, though.

I could also imagine a randomizer would be helpful. Filled with angry or exotic syllables to mix and match.
