How Do You Fall Asleep?

Oh, I've also found that if I start to play out a scenario in my head as I'm falling asleep, it will continue into my dreams.

I usually get in bed around 3am, even though I'm still wide awake. I toss and turn and get annoying for a while. Then I say "fuck it" and get out of bed and usually make myself something to eat. Then at 5am I watch "Angel" on TNT. Depending on where I am at that point, I will either continue to watch the second episode of "Angel." After that, I might watch "Charmed." If it's really bad, I watch both episodes of "Charmed" and then watch "ER."

By this point it's 10am. Since I usually have to be at work anywhere from 2-5pm, I will force myself to lay back down in my bed. I usually don't fall asleep until about noon, and even then I wake up every hour or so.

So...how do I fall asleep? I go through that routine for about 6 nights in a row, and then by the time I get to the 7th night I'm so fucking exhausted that I pass out and sleep for about 14 hours.

That cant be healthy...

Not at all, if I don't get 8 hours a night I'm useless.

In my younger days (ages 19-23) I could work five days straight on 5 hours of sleep and then crash on the sixth. After I had a modified RPLND, I had to get eight hours sleep at a minimum, not to mention that my system would completely shut down by 10:30pm.

Books on tape. Especially 'Talking Heads' by Alan Bennett. Fab stories, fab narration, only trouble is you have to keep rewinding as you've dropped off half way thro *zzzz*

I normally go to bed some time after 10pm, and then I'm playing on my laptop until I feel sleepy.

How do I fall asleep? In peace and quiet, I just snuggle down with my face under my duvet, and I close my eyes. Within a couple of minutes a strong feeling of relaxation comes over me. And with that feeling my mind begins to fill with passive random imagery, and my consciousness fades. I don't notice that I'm falling asleep. And I don't normally wake up again until it's near enough time to get up. It's rare that I have disturbed sleep.

But night time noises can keep me awake, like things creaking in strong wind, or metal wind chimes, or car/house alarms. I just can't relax with those three noises -- I lay there thinking I might as well be sat up staring across the room at the wall.

I usually go up to bed a couple of hours before I intend going to sleep and switch my laptop on. Spend an hour or two reading a book and/or watching TV. Then I turn the volume down low enough to just hear, and the sleep timer on, turn on my side and close my eyes.
If I don't have some noise I tend to think too loud and find it hard to sleep. :)

I find tv and movies I really like send me off. I just put on DS9 and I am away ot the Prisoner.

If I'm alone and sober, I just read til I start to fall asleep (this is not recommended with hardcovers...I have dropped more than a few books on my face this way) and then turn out my lamp. I prefer silence and complete darkness, but, having worked overnights in the past, can fall asleep anywhere, anytime, as long as I'm actually tired.

If my boyfriend's staying over, there's generally some sort of sexiness and then we both fall asleep. He hogs the middle of the bed and I get the wall, heh. I blame this on him not owning an actual bed. He sleeps on a couch at home.

If I'm drunk, sleeping happens much, much faster. Sometimes I still try to read. This does not work well.

My wife usually goes to sleep before I do, so I just slide into bed with her and turn off the light. I tend to fall asleep very fast and then I'm out cold until the alarm.

Not a good idea to fall asleep with any kind of headphones or earbuds. While awake, you can filter out and adjust to varying volumes.

While asleep, you lose that ability to compensate, and consistent unfiltered sound can severely affect your hearing.

I have pretty good "sleep hygiene" these days - I just go to bed, turn off the lights and close my eyes and relax. Sooner or later I drop off. I don't read/watch TV/eat/etc in bed any more. It makes a big difference to just use your bedroom for sleeping and not for anything else (well, and maybe one or two other occasional activites...)

When I did night shifts on a semi-regular basis, they really screwed up my sleep patterns. I used to to a week of them in a row every couple of months and it took a good four or five days to adjust to them and then a couple of weeks to really get back to normal again.

Like choosing your day's clothing, and accessories?:p

I could never do this. I think too much when there's no noise, and I find it hard to "wind down" any where other than the bedroom.
