How do people buy the ridiculous looking characters?

One of my favorite alien speccies was in TOS: Catspaw, where we saw Korob and Sylvia in their true form-- tiny, feathery things, helpless without their transmuter devices.

One gripe that I have about this one is that you can clearly see the strings on these puppets. They could have done a better job at hiding them.

I still think "The Chase" was needless and redundant, giving that the question was already explained by the discovery of The Preservers in TOS.

Of course, a TNG writer would have had to SEE and/or care about TOS to know that. :klingon:
The only question answered by the creation of the Preservers in TOS is how humanoids from a particular culture/group/society could wind up on a planet light years from their home worlds. It doesn't really address why so many aliens look similar to humans and can breed with humans and each other.

MCCOY: Were you able to make sense our of the symbols?
SPOCK: Yes. The obelisk is a marker, just as I thought. It was left by a super-race known as the Preservers. They passed through the galaxy rescuing primitive cultures which were in danger of extinction and seeding them, so to speak, where they could live and grow.
MCCOY: I've always wondered why there were so many humanoids scattered through the galaxy.
SPOCK: So have I. Apparently the Preservers account for a number of them.
MCCOY: That's probably how the planet has survived all these centuries. The Preservers put an asteroid deflector on the planet.

What do aliens look like? I mean, really look like in real life. Assuming, that is, that there is life on other planets in other solar systems. I don't think anyone has ever seen an offworlder outside of those "alien autopsy" tv specials.

As far as I know, all alien life is humanoid with bumpy foreheads. I saw it on Star Trek.

Okay, that's reasonable.

At the time it was first aired, the TV resolution was such that the strings weren't visible.
