How did your opinions change during 2nd viewing?

I finished TNG and DS9 about 9 months ago, and obviously Ive started watching them again. I find it interesting that attitudes, particularly towards certain characters, have been changed so much since my first viewing.

I used to hate Dax (Im talking about Jadzia, I will always loathe Ezri), but now I kind of like her, and regard her as a fun addition to the pretty morose main cast. I used to like Bashir, but now I find him kind of annoying, and while I still like Kira I dont think shes as great as I once did.

Similiarly, I didnt really enjoy Data or Worf much when I first watched TNG, even Picard was a character I thought was overrated. Troi I hated at first, but now I quite enjoy her, although only when the episode is not specifically about her.

Did anyone else experience this sort of thing? I find it odd, because I usually dont change my opinion of films or television series just by watching them a few more times.

Not radically changed opinions on those series have watched more than once (VOY, TOS, most of DS9), but...watching TNG for first time and having finally seen RELICS, was sort of surprised finding myself so 'meh' on Scotty. Found whole episode a bit 'who cares?'. Thinking back now, I guess Chekov and Scotty are two characters I like least, both from TOS and the movies. Maybe because so often used for light relief, and kinda crude cultural stereotypes.

Kind of for me. When I first watched TOS as a kid 11 - 12 years ago, I was just fascinated by the whole show. A lot of the issues in the show as well as the movies went over my head. I was just focused on Kirk and Spock and whatever they were doing. Like, I really did enjoy Kirk as a character and I thought the Tribbles episode was hilarious.

Rewatching the show in my 20s now has changed a lot of things I originally enjoyed. Kirk now annoys me in a lot of episodes, I love the hell out of Bones, Spock will always be my first lahv ♥, and I do not find the Tribbles episode to be all that funny at all. I, Mudd is a lot more hilarious than Tribbles in my opinion. And I appreciate the messages in the movies, such as the whole metaphor of life and death, political strife...

Except Generations is worst than I remember it and V ended up being a 2 hour look into a fanfic gone wrong.

Also, TV Land used to air TAS around the same time Sci-fi was airing TOS and I enjoyed the cartoon whenever I bothered to wake up early on Saturdays. Now? omg, I can't sand to sit through one episode. Sabotaaaaaaj.

I have seen every episode of every series so many times but occasionally I take something new out of the story. The other day I was watching the episode Tapestry, where Picard and Q revisit his younger days.
Working in politics I have always looked at these episode with a certain mindset, eg don't mess with the timeline because of the consequences to that timeline. If Picard doesn't follow his true path, certain treaties may not be formed altering the balance of power in the quadrant etc. But now I'm also training to be a therapist (goes well with politics!) and when I last watched it I really saw the impact of events and circumstances on the personality and behaviour.
- got to love that show, there something for everyone!

Nemesis was almost like a totally different movie for me second time around. Initially I panned the hell out of it like everyone else. But when I saw it again a couple of years later--I dunno, I think I was able to look at it from a more casual perspective--and wound up actually liking it more than (gasp) First Contact.

I don't see what the fuss is about. I have watched the different shows and I liked the characters the first time around and I didn't change my view the second time around. For example, I liked both versions of Dax on DS9. I've liked Troi the first time I have seen the show and ever since.

This works for other movies too. For example, SW1 I really hated Anakin as the boy who could do anything. It didn't matter how many times I watched the movie I still hated the character.

I nearly always like characters better the second time around. Characters I really didn't care for (Kira) become dear to me. There is also a knowing-their-fates element to it, you are aware of what is ahead of them and you watch it through those eyes. I've only had one instance where I loved a character and then with repeated viewings have gone off them.. but I'm hoping to rehabilitate that situation.

In terms of characters, I agree with everyone about Kira and Dax - I love them now but it took me a while. I suppose they evolve as characters and that helps you warm to them. I'll have to watch DS9 a few more times over before I get Odo though!

TOS: first love. No changing that.

DS9 I over-exalted the first time. I remembered it for years as being, well, better than it was. Just overall. Rewatched it via netfix a few years back. Ok.

VOY: It is was it is. Has a verve to it still. Never thought it was great. I like it ok now.

TNG, have never rewatched, oddly enough. Wonder why? Probably some pretty good sci-fi eps in there, right? Maybe I will.
