How Could The TNG Films Be Improved?

Not to nit...but would making Lt. Hawk gay really improve FC substantially as a film...especially "without making it a plot point?" I have no issue with Hawk being gay (in my head cannon, he is), but this is kind of like saying "paint the hallways a darker grey" in terms of how to improve a movie...

Speaking as a gay man, it would have made the film better for me, especially given the rumors flying around prior to the film's release. FC was released at a point in time when seeing a character from the franchise I loved most at the time be homosexual would have made a difference.

Understood. I recall being disappointed / confused as to why that element didn't make it into the film myself.

But none of those were used at the climax of a battle.

I'd prefer the movies never use stock footage, but if you're going to use it, at least don't use it in that kind of situation.

Even though it wasn't "climactic," the Kobyashi Maru simulation was a pretty epic battle...and that too was stock footage.

Hmmmm....interesting to think about it all this way. They really DID have to cut budget corners in some of these films, huh?

Actually, I thought the stock footage in the KM simulation was (unintentionally) clever...there's an odd sort of sense to the idea that since it's a simulation they'd use captured footage of ships in action rather than trying to create all new stuff. Assuming Starfleet had to cut budget corners as well. :)

One could even rationalize argue that stock footage was used there to telegraph to the franchise fans that what we were seeing at that point wasn't a real battle. :P

Generations- Yesterdays Enterprise The Movie (see the fan trailer thread)
FC - ok as is.
Insurrection- Mirror Universe? (like the new IDW comics)
Nemesis - Return of the Conspiracy aliens? Borg origins? (Vger? 7of9?) Romulan war film?

Twenty years ago it may have been done terribly, though, albeit with the best of intentions.

Don't kill Kirk off in a lame way.

Turn the wacky Data notch right down, I like Data as a character - as a reflection of humanity's foibles.
In too many scenes he was just a fool. Love him in First Contact though.

Take all copies and shoot them into the Sun. Hopefully future generations will never find out that they existed.

Agree.

Generations
should have been "Yesterday's Enterprise"

FC
as is, fine.

Khan 2.0 brilliant idea that Insurrection should be "Mirror,Mirror"

Nemesis needed a more interesting plot.

Nemesis on its surface was not a bad concept and Tom Hardly was a coup as an A-list actor in the making. I think the movie had a reason to exist and could have been improved.

Also, the concept of Soran destroying worlds to get into the Nexus is fine but make the worlds more important. A rock in the middle of nowhere inhabited by a bunch of idiots who haven't even discovered Warp drive yet? Meh.
It's the not them that mattered when the shockwave took out the planet. It was the Enterprise being destroyed that mattered. Everyone fails to see that.

So the Next Generation movie should have been a reset-button episode in which no actual thing happens and what we see on-screen are not the TV show's characters, but imposters with the same names?

I'll grant it might have been thrilling, and it was fine for episode number 18 (or whatever) of season three of seven, but there is a problem with making that sort of thing your big-screen outing for two years in either direction.

^That's actually a similar argument to why I feel that AGT wouldn't have worked well as a feature film. It's very Picard-centric and by the end of it for most of Our Heroes nothing has changed.

I think Picard, on discovering that Soran was destroying suns to alter the course of the Nexus and thus endangering planets, decided that this was a bad thing that needed to be stopped even if it meant risking the Enterprise as he had done so many times before. The needs of the many etc etc.

My point was, why make them these obscure (to us) backwater planets? Make them heaving metropolis' and introduce some real peril and high stakes. Might have made for a more dramatic finale.

Character arcs. Just like many have already said, films would have benefitted from some change in the status quo.

Have Riker and Troi get their own ship after the Generations. They could have still gotten back into action in First Contact after their new ship would have been damaged by the Borg. Just like Worf.

Insurrection I would have gotten rid of completely and done something better instead of it. It does feel like an two-part episode or a tv-movie. Maybe something with Picard being promoted or moving on with his life after finally having dealt with the Borg.

Nemesis is same as Insurrection. Whole premise is ridiculous and needed to be re-thinked. Maybe some sort of an galaxy spanning event with different crews. Picard as high Federation official/admiral, Riker and Troi on their own ship, Worf as ambassador. Maybe have Data as captain of the Enterprise. Something big happens that brings all of them together.

A Romulan invasion of the Federation using Picard's residual memories in his clone to cut right through Federation space, occupy Vulcan, and head directly for Earth? Maybe with some new devastating weapon? From what I recall, it felt like everyone met Shinzon and then it felt like nothing was really at stake. Maybe if we go off of Romulans as the villains in Insurrection, they could have developed something that literally sucks life energy from their enemies and transfers it to them as an energy force: a beam weapon powered by souls that can cut through planets and fleets, which gets more powerful with the more people it kills. Maybe to tie it in with Shinzon, he expresses psychic abilities which project the beam weapon using life energy, and all that science which is really magic.

Although I would've happily watched TNG movies forever I'm also fairly relieved Nemesis never got a sequel because watching B-4 slowly transform into the Data we know and love, albeit a slightly portlier version than we remember, would've made for a terrible movie irrespective of what plot they wrapped round it.

I have nothing against Brent Spiner, but there is too much Data mugging in the films. Actually, the films do have an arc. Generations is all about Data mugging, and Nemesis is all about Data mugging, the former because they wanted to play with comic relief emotional Data, and the latter because the screenwriter had a man crush on Brent Spiner.
