How could a Star Trek fan NOT like Insurrection?

This is classic Star Trek... it's like watching a really excellent two-parter and the writing and characters are true to the series. I enjoy rewatching this movie and I'm consistently surprised that some supposed "fans" are so hostile about a really good TNG movie.

Because it's full of obnoxious, unfunny humor; the McGuffin is forced and absurd; the conflict is also forced; Picard and crew act like self-righteous douchebags for the entire last half of the film; the villains actually have a pretty good claim on the planet, or at least just as much of one as the protagonists; the Ba'ku are unsympathetic and annoying; and why didn't Starfleet just come out in the open and cut a deal with the Ba'ku and Son'a for use of half the planet as a heath spa or something, anyway? It's not like 300 people are going to be bothered by a Starfleet medical facility for treating people's ailments that could be located on another continent. Unless they would. Which would make them selfish jerks.

No. It's a movie that's powered by everyone being selfish asses, and I'll be perfectly happy if I never see it again.

It has a whole load of problems (some mentioned above) but the worst aspect for me is the dreadful humour. It reminded me of the worst "humourous" moments of the series.

If by that you mean that it distills the worst characteristics of TNG while removing all the good ones, than yes.

This. And it was also incredibly boring and preachy, it beats us over the head with what we're supposed to think and who we're supposed to support, their portrayals are simplistic in the worst possible way - the villains are ugly, the "good guys" are pretty, eternally young and new-age 'natural folks' - and that especially grates when the movie does not make a good case why we should support the Ba'ku and sympathize with Picard and co.'s decision. Is it because the Ba'ku are more personable than Son'a and because Picard fancies a Ba'ku woman?

At least Nemesis managed to be entertaining in a cheesy way, and didn't almost put me to sleep halfway through.

I'm not sure you could just say the villains were right.
I agree that there is something to the fact that they could help billions with the particles from the planet but they didn't even try to work out a deal with the Baku.
The problem is these people were going to be removed from their homes without their knowing about it.

I think using the planet to help people is a good thing but they should have talked to the Baku and worked something out as opposed to just removing them from their homes and dumping them on some other world without telling them.
So the villians had the right idea but carried it out in the wrong way.

That said, Insurrection is just alright for me. The problem for me is that it is just like an episode and when I go to see a new trek movie I want to see something a little more epic like First Contact was.

The key difference was the planet in question in the show was not a federation planet but the planet in insurrection was.
