How can people submit ideas to studios when this can happen?

I do think there are far too many people who try to construct ways that they're similar, like that list above. It does border on conspiracy theory. Like I said, there are enough basic similarities that I don't think it's completely coincidental, but there's not enough of a real comparison to say it's a ripoff. I think it's far more likely that DS9 was inspired by or made to co-opt B5.

But the wars were NOTHING alike, and DS9's didn't even start until late in the show's run. The political situations were nothing alike either except in a vague way between the Narn/Centauri and Cardassians/Bajorans

And even JMS doesn't claim that DS9 kept copying from B5 in its later years. He only says that the first season or two of DS9 was influenced by his B5 material.

Whoever wrote that list has probably never read TVTropes. Many of those items are simply common storytelling devices, so in itself the list really isn't incriminating. It's interesting, and there definitely are similarities, but similar doesn't mean plagiarized.

No, VOY ripped off Gilligan's Island, except Janeway & crew made it back home in the end.

Wish they had wound up in orbit of the Ocampan homeworld for the finale...that would have been hysterical.
