An example of how a recession is supposed to work - weed out the weaker businesses, let the rest survive and profit from the recovery and then hire more workers.

Even though I have a job, the bad economy is definitely not "hype." There are signs of recovery but things still suck pretty badly in a lot of places.

My wife and kids are in Indiana, and when I go back to visit, I swear a handful more businesses have gone under each time. Much of the state (and the Midwest in general) is going through that right now. She's looking for a job but can't find one--not even the fast food joints are hiring. They're getting by with leaner staff.

The people who remain at my former employer have to work 60+ hours a week with no extra pay. A lot of them were also forced to take pay cuts. And just to keep them from getting too uppity, every couple months they lay off 20-40 more people--and turn those jobs over to people in India.

If I was still working there, I'd probably shoot myself.
