How and why was Kelsey Grammar on TNG?

Also, y'know, people in real life do gain weight over time. Even though health habits are better, that still hasn't changed by the 24th century. Look at Riker in Farpoint vs. Riker in Nemesis. So I don't think Kirstie Alley being a bit heavier when she appeared on the Bozeman would have been a big deal.

If Kristie Alley were to of played Saavik on the episode Cause And Effect, that would have meant that Saavik wasn't the bride when Picard attended the wedding of Sarek's son.

The scheduling conflicts are true, but if Saavik were on the Bozeman, that would've caused one huge continuity gaffe -- for one thing, she never would've been in Star Trek II. IIRC, the Bozeman came from a year that predates TWOK. Of course, the production crew might have noticed this and changed the script ever so slightly.

As for Kelsey Grammer, weren't the sets for Cheers and TNG right next to each other at Paramount as well?

According to Eric Stillwell at a convention, Picard wasn't talking about Spock in "Sarek." Then again, I don't know how he would know.

So did I. And while Kelsey Grammer might have been willing to do an onscreen role in "Cause and Effect", I doubted that he would have gone to the trouble just to do ONE WORD of dialogue. Worf was already in the film anyway, so that's why I thought that line was his.

I thought Kelsey Grammer did a great job on his one and only episode of Star Trek The Next Generation in "Cause and Effect" I would enjoy seeing him in other TREK adventures.:techman::)

Cheers, Frasier, Entertainment Tonight (Tesh), and all of the modern Star Treks (I think) were filmed at Paramount Studios in California.

My question then is why didn't KG appear in the Frasier Trek spoof that somebody will no doubt find on youtube. All the main stars seem to be in it except for the apparant Trek nerd?

If memory serves, that was the time he was having renewed trouble with his substance abuse and crashed his car - he went missing from Frasier for two weeks while he went into rehab. Pretty sure that was late 1996.

I read in an interview with Grammer that the sound guys were working on that scene, knew that he was a huge fan and had played the captain of the Boseman in "Cause and Effect". They had the idea to use Grammer's voice. Supposedly they rang him - and he delivered the single word over the telephone. And for no charge.

It wasn't necessarily Spock. The writers ended up leaving it as a tease for the fans. (In fact, they had to fight to get the name "Spock" mentioned in the scene where Sarek was "losing it".) In an interview about the episode, Gene Roddenberry answered the same question about "Was it Spock?" with an enigmatic "I think perhaps it was..."

Yep. It was his idea to have that skit written, IIRC, but Kate Mulgrew had to perform all his lines at the last minute when Grammer was raced off to rehab again.

Huh, and I liked the idea of Mulgrew leading the Frasier cast on the bridge :)

But all this time I always thought Grammer was the Klingon, hence the loud audience reaction. I hadn't seen the entire program so I inferred that it was him. I guess I'm wrong here, but Grammer as a Klingon would've made for a great surprise.

Yep. Made it a very awkward skit, too.

I don't know the answer to your question but I thought Bebe Neuwirth's role was terrific and not at all a waste. And in fact, "First Contact" is one of my favorite episodes, in part thanks to her.

If you liked her that's cool; however, I don't really agree. She basically played some no-name horny nerd-alien who appears out of nowhere and wants to jump Riker's bones, and her screen time was about two minutes, at best. It felt like her scene was just shoehorned in, and was unnecessary to the rest of the plot. As the above poster said, a complete waste of her talents.

Although Kelsey Grammer had even less screen time than Bebe Neuwirth, at least he was a dignified Starfleet captain who didn't act like a complete idiot.

IIRC K.G. did Cause and Effect for Scale because he was a huge Trek fan and just wanted to be in an episode. Not much different from Mic Fleetwood playing a holographic Klingon. They just wanted to be a part of Trek.

Fleetwood played an Antedean in the first season. John Tesh played the holographic Klingon.

It served the plot since it was a take on the "I made love to an alien" thing.

Exactly. Like one of those National Enquirer stories. I'm sure the Malcorians have publications like that, so Neuwirth's character probably sold the story of her affair with the alien to the Malcorian Tattler.

Surprised noone else noted this, but Bateson's first officer was originally going to be Saavik, played by Kirstie Allie in a nod to Cheers. They probably didn't want her taking up the whole bridge shot though.

Be nice!

Yup.

Dude.

^^^ Originally Kristie Alley was going to play the USS Bozeman, but there were scheduling problems.
There were scheduling problems; Ms. Alley had penciled in that time to eat the Alpha Quadrant.

Alley was thin was she was doing substances. When she quit all of that, she blew up and has had weight problems ever since, not unlike Stevie (Mama Cass Elliot Lookalike) Nicks of Fleetwood Mac.

Several different sources point to him doing that single word of dialog for F.C. for the same reason. I haven't been able to find proof one way or the other, but it wouldn't be too far of a stretch. K.G. has been doing voice work for years. Just look at Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons. ;)

Did he do it for scale? I remember reading somewhere that they had to forgo some special effects to "pay Grammer's salary"

I always thought he did it for scale. I never pegged Grammer to be one of those super-demanding Marlon Brando/Jennifer Lopez types. Besides, the FX in that episode positively rocked :)
