How about a Trek show about the moon colony?

I have always wanted to see this place, after that scene in "Valiant" between Jake and the transporter chief/cadet. At some point I think it is a matter of time before Trek does a show set on a planet. Why not do one where you can explore a human culture that might be a little different than how life is for other humans in the Federation. Granted you would want aliens also living on the planet for variety and maybe a starfleet faculity as well so you can still have some of that Trek stuff, also. Also even if you did do a another spaceship show why not just do a season arc that revolves around the colony. Hell this could even be the main arc for season 2 of "Discovery" if they wanted to.

Is't part of the appeal though that it is the moon that we see every night here on earth? It's the place were Neil Armstrong walked on the moon and humans use to think of as a cool place to explore before the more sexy Mars stuff took over people's dreams. A regular earth colony just doesn't have that real world connection to it.

We see Earth all the time, I'd want the colonists to look up and see a huge purple gas giant with an enormous set of rings and three other moons visible to the naked eye. A place teeming with new life, where the colonists live on the edge of a new frontier and must build good relations with the races that live nearby.

A purple gas giant with rings and other moons sounds like a lot of CGI for what I would imagine would just be used as a establishing shot.
As for other aliens I would like them as well but why not just say they are already living on the moon? In fact you think there would proably be other cities also on the moon and not all of them would be human dominated cities.

Creating the barren surface of the moon with Earth above it would be a lot of be a lot of cgi as well, and there would be aliens living there, however I don't see what a series set so close to home would bring to the Trek universe, or what it would really do for the characters.

The fun is being able to explore a future city, plus I got admit I kind of like the idea of being able to go see more of earth as well. Basically this would be trek's first major look into what life is like in the Federation when Starfleet isn't the main thrust of the character's life. Your star could be a starfleet ensign assigned to the starfleet faculity and these would be his/her first visit to mars. Make it kind of a methphor of a young American visiting Europe for the first time. He would encounter humans who might be a little different from him, since he grew up on earth, and thus was raised in a different culture and you would have aliens he has never seen or has only read about or seen on a Holodeck.
If you want some danger maybe there is some Romulan terrorist in the citiy but since he is just a ensign he is out of the loop when it comes to big plot details and we see a starfleet story being told from the perspective of just a random officer. A "LOwer Decks" type of aproach to the main character.

Assuming that terraforming was a well established/understood procedure, I think it would be fairly soon that the Moon received the the full weigh treatment.

So maybe not so barren?

Agree, they look similar enough, not exact, to be in the same production design "universe" and could coexist on the Moon. Especially since in 2OO1 when it is stated there are several different bases on the Moon.

From what Dorian said in "Valiant" it sounds as though the Moon isn't quite so habitable, pretty though:

To be fair, even before DS9 aired we knew about the wormhole, so there was certainly an implicit possibility for exploration. The Dominion kind of sidetracked that, obviously, but we did get some exploration in earlier seasons (and a limited amount in later seasons).

I like the idea of connecting something we see everyday but look up at in awe, to the established Star Trek mythology, but I agree with the others that by the 23rd/24th Century the moon would be far too pedestrian when there's a whole galaxy out there. Any stationary series set on the moon would need some kind of hook to sustain it (even Space: 1999 took the moon on a journey through space).

What would keep it fresh on a weekly basis? Even if you ignore DS9's 'alien of the week' episodes, it was still set in the frontiers of Federation territory, and you had the continuing arc of being in the shadow of the Bajoran occupation/Dominion war to keep it going.
