How a new Trekkie would get their start

New Trekkies get their start the same way 'old Trekkies' did - by watching Star Trek.

I'm rather... perplexed as to the purpose of this thread - are you suggesting your overly complex scenario is the way all new Trekkies are going to be getting into Trek?

Because really, I doubt that the majority of people here are 40-50 year olds who grew up watching TOS and went on from there. In fact, I don't fit that criteria in the slightest, as I only became a Trekkie when I was 13 and started watching TNG on DVD with my family - in the 6 years since then, I've seen every episode of every series (even hokey old TAS) and all the movies too - so its quite possible for us youngings' to become Trekkies.

Are you talking about someone you know? This scenario seems a bit too complex to be something you just made up.

That's a very thoroughly thought out scenario but it can't be the only way someone would get hooked on Trek Apart from not everyone living in the U.S.A or having that level of access to media — I'd say there would be as many ways as there are people. My bet is that if you took a poll of every member of this BBS you wouldn't find two members who had got into it in the same way or had the same experience of following it. ;)

No, not the only way. Just a possible way. I was wondering about how it would happen today and had some ideas.

And I'm a screenwriter-in-progress. Complex, overly-thought-out writing is the only way to sustain two hours. If people can't tell it's something I just made up, then this type of writing is (finally) coming more naturally to me.

No, in case you were wondering, the script is not about Trekkies.

What really got me into the Star Trek were weekend marathons of the top ten episodes for the original series and The Next Generation. I think those work really well for episodic television shows that aren't all that serialized. Today with DVDs and Blu-rays it's easy to have your own personal marathon. There's nothing like watching the best of the best.

This. The OP makes a crucial mistake of suggesting that the premise is "How would someone become a new Trekkie today?" and then actually writing on the subject of "How would someone living in USA become a new Trekkie today?"

DS9 doesn't air on TV.
It does/did in the last few years, just not in USA (I presume).

The last time DS9 aired on HRT (Croatian Radio Television) was last year. They've been airing all modern Trek shows, 5 times a week, for the last couple of years or so: TNG, then DS9, then VOY, and ENT is still airing. From what I've heard, they had already repeated TNG, DS9 and VOY a couple of times in the last several years (I remember when I first got HRT on cable - some 4-5 years ago - they were airing VOY.) So, for someone living in Croatia, or someone living in Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro... who has cable TV, the most likely way of becoming Trekkie today would be by watching one of those shows on TV. Or, of course, by watching the 2009 movie.

I worked when I was 15

I knew of Trek at seven, from occasional airing of TOS. I don't think I was aware of the TOS movies before TNG came out.

And I have to say the OP's reasoning is absurd.

Well, it's nice to occasionally present arguments I haven't been arguing for 10 years straight. I could argue the state and direction of the Star Trek franchise in my sleep.

Better to try talking about other things, fail, and see the flaws of the argument than to not even try at all.

Not to mention the fact that the OP assumes the only way to get into Trek is by watching it on TV.

I think there are multiple ways people my age (late teens to early 20s) can get into Star Trek.

- ST09, is obviously a big one, and as we've seen, its inspired quite a few people to buy other series on DVD, or watch it on TV
- having Trekkie parents, is the most obvious scenario to me because thats how I got into it ;)
- having Trekkie friends, who organise marathons or lend you DVDs, is the way I've tried to get some of my friends into it...
and then the OPs suggestion of - watching it on TV, which as DevilEyes pointed out, makes it quite possible to watch every series, if we remember that there are more countries than the USA

I have nearly all of Trek on DVD (except ENT season one and TNG season one, which I will get around to buying), so I can lend discs to friends or siblings interested in getting into the shows. So not having access to the shows isnt the problem. Having an interest in seeking it out is.
