In Paris intramuros, you can have a 1 or 2 bedrooms apartment, approx 50m², variable according to where it is in the city (some quarters are really really more expensive than others). It may be cheaper in the suburb...or not.
Other big cities in the country are usually expensive too, especially in the south. There is really a difference with the more average cities that are more affordable (I can't say how much).

I'm in Chicago and since there's such a difference in pricing depending on the neighborhood, I just did a search in my neighborhood. It's a pretty nice area but comes with a fairly steep price tag.

The search I did came up with basically returned 2 bedroom 2 bathroom units. Usually 1300-1500 sq ft, some more some less.

Yea, you're not going to get much for that price in the city.

You might get that size house (in the OP) in the burbs, but it would not be the custom job in the link. That kind of house here in Chicagoland would cost twice that price.

Depending on the specific Los Angeles location, The $500000 to $600000 range gets you a range of options, none of them big or fancy. You have lofts in downtown, townhomes/condos near the beach older single family 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom houses in the outer suburbs. A single family home in LA proper or near the beach in this range will likely be a foreclosure.

Oh, I think it depends on where you are in the city. I think the same money would go further in say, Wrigleyville or far West Side for example. You'd at least be able to get another bedroom and it would probably be more spacious.

You think? Wrigleyville is pretty expensive - at least, it was 10 years ago. Don't know how bad things have gotten since the downturn.

I don't even know anything about prices on the west side. What is over there, anyway?

NJ, USA is hellish, but prices have dropped over the last few years. Go over to neighboring Pennsylvania, you can go west of Philadelphia and you can get 5 bedroom houses for under $200,00, which is just shocking to me.

Limiting my search to parts of town I'd be willing to live in, I found a nice 3 bd 1 bath house 1900 sq feet on a small lot for $579,000CDN. You could get a bigger house in the burbs for the same price, but I refuse spend more than 40 mins (both ways) commuting.

I'm looking for a house right now actually, and am lamenting how expensive real estate has become in my town. In the area I'm looking at $600k will get you an old beat up duplex that's 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms anywhere from 1300-1500 sq feet - a real slanty shanty. Pretty lame. I'm looking for a 1800-2300 sq foot home preferrably with a mortgage helper and that'll put me in the $800k range. Ouch.

^Damn. 5 years ago, our "new construction" home, at 1800-something sq feet, cost $120,000. We have three bedrooms, an office, an open sitting room space upstairs and down, and two and a half baths.

Our lot, though, is roughly the size of a postage stamp.
