they would have had to have given the slaves something to drink, no good showing up with dead cargo. since there's no guarantee there will be rain.

Eh, when they ship baby chicks to buyers they always ship a few extras just in case. Maybe they brought along extra slaves for similar reasons? But, yeah, I suppose they'd have to give them something to drink but at the same time I doubt they'd give them the rum or whatever drink they'd have on board. So that leaves me with the thought the slaves just drank whatever water rained or accumulated on the floor of the hold.

:wtf:
You overreached, no baby chicks nor human cargo you wanted to sell alive for a profit will last a couple of months it would take to sail, under wind power or lack of it across the Atlantic Ocean. They were fed

Something I noticed on a rewatch.

3M suggests that the crew got better drinking water as a way to eliminate a reason why the crew didn't get sick vs. the slaves. They didn't exactly carry water with them on old sailing vessels as there was no way to safely store it (water has all sorts of nasties living in it) so back then ships were much more likely to carry rum or other alcoholic beverages on board to drink as it was more "shelf stable." The slaves likely wouldn't get the benefit of anything to drink other than rain water coming in from the the grates in the ceiling, though maybe they were given some rum but I sort-of doubt it. (And obviously drinking the sea water was out of the question.)

That really doesn't ring true given the long travel time needed for such slave trade. Rain water wouldn't be sufficient, and alcohol would just make the dehydration worse.

*does a quick google search*

Conditions on Slave Ships

...Water was another problem, but captains were more careful about the amount of water they took. In hot weather, dehydration occurred very often, but most of the year, slaves had sufficient water. Slaves often drank more water than a normal person would, simply because bellow decks, it was very hot and humid....

Edit:

Here's one that specifically talks about contaminated water for slaves on such vessels (though, it deals with the Middle Passage):

In Addition, contaminated water supplies produced a variety of gastrointestinal disorders which increased fatalities.

I'm really liking Amber, just like I did on Joan of Arcadia. I hope 13's film career is going well.
I absolutely adore Amber Tamblyn in everything she does. I'm loving this. That little pouty face made my wife and I both go "Awwww!"

I agree, I'm glad I'm not the only one. :)

The strangest thing about the episode for me was: House is getting himself infected with the fucking smallpox (yes it turned out he didn't, but everyone thought he did) and Wilson's #1 priority is finding a stuffed animal for one of his patients? :wtf:

You really need to brush up on your naval lore.

Ships were carrying casks of water since the ancient days. Barrels FULL of water were in the hold. Yes, the water eventually became brackish. That's why ships would stop at islands and ports with fresh water sources.

That being said, it's a famous story that on the Mayflower, the pilgrims preferred drinking the ship's beer (including their kids) because they didn't like the way the water tasted.

I'm just hoping Ms. Masters doesn't turn into a Westley Crusher character -- the impossibly young genius who solves every problem that more experienced doctors (scientists/Starfleet officers) can't seem to crack. :borg:

Well, Masters isn't impossibly young. As I mentioned last week, Amber Tamblyn is actually ten months older than Olivia Wilde, despite her babyfaced appearance, and Taub did say that Masters is essentially the same age as Thirteen. Yes, she's only a med student, but that's because she earned two other college degrees before going to med school, so she got a late start.

And yes, she has less hands-on medical experience, but experience isn't everything. Someone who's just in the process of learning a discipline can actually be better at remembering its rules or minutiae because it's fresher information. The others may have to try to dredge up some obscure medical precedent they read about ten years ago, but she could've been studying it last month and still have it fresh in her mind.

I never cared for 13, and this far I like Masters far better. Could one hope Wildes movie gets delayed?

Shooting's already finished. In fact, the first trailer for Cowboys and Aliens just debuted today.

EDIT: Although it turns out she's already at work on another film, The Change-Up. Yet she will return to House sometime this season.

I really don't understand the "fan-hate" that's out there for Wilde/Thirteen. It's everywhere and I don't get it. I simply blame it ont he natural inclination some people have to hate beautiful women.

I don't hate her, she just brings nothing to Greg House that Cameron didn't already do. The entire she is dying and just wants to make a difference as her reason to be hasn't worked for me.

Now with 3M House is dealing with another genius. Young and inexperienced but he is showing respect for her already on a level where he ran over others.
