BTTF creators Bob Zemeckis and Bob Gale mention on the DVD that the LED colors of Red, Green, and Yellow were inspired by the 3 lightbulbs of the same color on the top of The Time Machine in George Pal's film.

So by the logic of some in this thread Back to the Future was a remake of The Time Machine...
