Honor Harrington

I've read (audiobooks) all the harrington series... and all the jack campbell lost fleet series and find the lost fleet books a little more believeable (military and weapons) then the harrington books...

Man, I would love to hear the audio books versions of Honor Harrington. I've already have read them all, but I have a long commute to work. I haven't been able to find any of the Honor audio books.

I just checked itunes, they are there. Expensive though over $20 US per book.

I got lucky, went to a used book store and found one of the later books in hardback. It came with all the previous books in electronic format on a CD inside the back cover. (amazing that it was still there considering it was a used book). At the time I had only previously purchased "On Basilisk Station". Saved me a ton of money and storage space.

You might try Baen's website, they may have the older books up for free in ebook format.

Edit: Go here, they seem to have a couple of the Honor books as free downloads:

some of the public libraries <might> have them to check out...
I enjoy audiobooks..... a lot like watching a movie in your head.

Despite the "Mary Sue" moniker, I think Honor has several flaws to compliment her "Practically-Perfect-In-Every-Way" characterization.

Mostly they're internal flaws of self-image, self-confidence, rage, & vengeance.

Numerous times, the woman has been within a hair's breadth of becoming unhinged or crossing the line into doing something she'll never completely come back from. I keep hoping one day we'll see her slip.

The repercussions would be fascinating.

Because only as the main characer and primary Mary Sue, can she go to those depths and almost cross those lines, and survive - not only survive, but probably come out of it with another title.

So what do all the "Mary Sue" believers like about the series?

Or is that the only real sore spot for a lot of people?

Not trying to be argumentative, I just hear the Mary Sue and the lengthy unedited prose of Weber comments the most. What's keeping you all interested? or are you saying you're no longer interested after a certain point.

The only aspects that have ever turned me off are some of the political scenes, but even those have provided a background of context for the best scenes to have the right emotional resonance.

My favorite parts have always centered around Grayson and her relationship with her adopted homeworld.

The only thing that bugs me is the degree to which the bad guys are presented as over-the-top evil. Or at least over-the-top incompetent. Which actually makes At All Costs a bit of a departure....both sides seem entirely sane for once.

I think I am no longer interested. The last few Weber books I've bought, be it Honor or her spinoffs or whetever, have just made me give up after a few chapters.

Good grief, he even took an old, tight book, Path of the Fury, and rewrote it to be three times longer!! :cardie:

Path of the Fury. That's the one about the Drop Commando bonded to her ship right? I loved that one. The first Ender's Game I read was a novella version I was shocked when I read the full novel thinking why did it need all the extra stuff added.

I was interested... it was good navy fiction... being a ex navy man I enjoyed it.... that is until I ran into the Jack Campbell Lost fleet series and found out what real space navy novels were all about...

The navel combat keeps me interested. Weber has a really well thought out set of rules to his technology and he sticks by them.
