Home Speaker Whine/Ringing

The Master of Tarquin Hill

Does anybody know how to solve this problem? It is starting to become really annoying.

When I go'a googlin to find ways of stopping this in my home entertainment system I only find info about concert speakers w/ mic's attached to them and the feedback that can occur because of positioning.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Do you have a cell phone? If so, move it toward and away from the speaker(s). If the noise increases when closer, it's the cell phone's signal inducing noise in the speaker. If that's the case, there's not much you can do but keep the phone away from the speaker.

If it doesn't have any effect, or the sound is different, there may be some type of feedback or line noise. Possibly an issue in the amp or reciever, or some other component the speaker is attached to.

Can't say much more without more information.

No, it's not the phone. I get the ring whether the phone is in the room or not.

What sort of info do you need?

I have:

- RCA 27 inch TV...about 15 or 20yrs old.
- 2 large Technics speakers
- 2 old Bose surround sound speakers
- Sony 5 disc changer
- Sony 6ch Amp
- Series 2 TiVo
- a cheap ass VCR

We need info like:

Is the ringing intermittent or constant and/or does it vary in tone?
Is it coming out of all the speakers?
Did you try moving the cables connecting your system or check your connections?

Hope I'm not asking the obvious; I'd like to see you solve the problem.

Robert

Yep - constant or variable noise - from only one or several speakers.

Swapping which speaker is attached to which output can held to isolate the issue all by itself - IF the noise is from just one such speaker. If the noise stays with the output, the amp has the issue. If the noise stays with the speaker, it's blown...

The noise is intermittent and the tone is always the same. The noise stops sometimes when the image changes, such as when a show goes to commercial or vice versa.

The noise only comes from the two main speakers. I don't think it is the speakers though, since I never have this ringing when I play music.

The main wire that connects the TV to the amp is gold and when I disconnect it from both the TV and the Amp then reconnect it the noise won't come back for several hours.

But, it eventually does come back.

It seems the cable between your TV and amp might be the issue. Is the sound a lower-pitched hum or buzz? If so, it might be a grounding issue. Try swapping cables.

^ Agreed on the cable swap. Sounds like a grounding or shielding problem.
