Today I visited Star Trek.com's store and noticed various merchandise -- mugs, t-shirts, mousepads -- with a "Home of the Fighting Phoenix" logo on them. Is this Starfleet Academy's official mascot? Where's this phrase from?

The "fighting Phoenix" is the academy sports teams mascot.

That was my guess, but I'm wondering if Paramount's merchandise department just made it up, or if there's a reference to it in Trek media I don't follow -- like comic books or something similar. It's a good mascot for Starfleet, if a bit Earth-centered.
