Maybe when off duty and with his family?
I think consently being on edge and in battle has made it hard to enjoy his rank. Wasn't titan supposed to be a deep exporation ship? They really haven't had the chance to explore to much.
They did plenty of exploring in The Red King, Orion's Hounds, and Over a Torrent Sea. Not to mention that there are a lot of large gaps between novels: two and a half months between OH and Sword of Damocles, nearly eight months between SoD and Destiny, two months between the prologue and first chapter of OaTS, and apparently a full year between Synthesis and Seize the Fire. Plenty of time for exploration -- and for Riker to have at least the occasional good mood.
I'm also a little bothered by the idea of a Vulcan caregiver for human (or particularly human-betazoid) infants. Human babies need a great deal of emotional interaction to develop normally, and I wonder how a Vulcan is able to provide that. Perhaps T'Pel feels it is logical to express emotions to some degree around the infant, as that is a psychological necessity for the human-betazoid development. I'd hate to imagine that poor baby stuck in a room for 8 hours a day with an emotionally repressed Vulcan. Might turn her into a sociopath.
"Pi is 3.14159! Yes it is! Avogadro's constant is 6.02 x 10^23. That is logical! Oh yes, it is logical!" or whatever Vulcans say to their babies.
Yeah, but in between all those things, he gets to sleep with Deanna Troi. I'd say that on the whole, he's pretty damn happy.![]()

^In terms of appearance? I can certainly see the appeal. But given the choice between a socially maladjusted cold fish and a deeply compassionate woman who comes from an uninhibited culture and can sense exactly what will make her partner happy... well, are you sure you want to base your decision on looks alone?

I think I addressed that when I established T'Pel in that role in my TTN books, didn't I? I tried to paint her as someone who believed in managing emotion, not simply repressing or denying it. I think her view would be that, since it is a scientific fact that infants require touch and affection for optimal physical, psychological, and social development, it would therefore be illogical to deny it to them.
I remember Frakes and Sirtis once suggested doing the story of Riker and Troi's marriage as a TV sitcom (and were only half joking)...

I like Riker and Troi, but I find this idea to be fairly horrifying. (Then again, the only sitcom I've been able to stand for years has been Big Bang Theory.)
I'd love to have a fly on the wall scene in a novel where we get to see her going, "T'coochie t'coochie s'coo" or "Pi is 3.14159! Yes it is! Avogadro's constant is 6.02 x 10^23. That is logical! Oh yes, it is logical!" or whatever Vulcans say to their babies.
