Was TNG too overly reliant on this as a plot device?

Did the crew spend too much time in it?

One of the things that tired me of the series was the back-to-the-holodeck trend where it seemed the entire show was built around "what can we do with it this week"?

Anyone else feel this way?

As a plot device, probably. As a technology? Maybe not. Its open space tech is still a level above VR goggles and things we can speculate for the next 30 years or so. After that all bets are off. But if we assume the state of technology in Star Trek, then it would certainly be new and impressive to everyone, as suggested in early STNG. Its capabilities would be uncertain and allow for some of the problems that led to plots we saw.

No, I always felt like they didn't incorporate it into the stories as much as they should've. It was, by far, the most realistic projection of a future technology in post-TOS Trek universe. I think most rooms should've been equipped with holideck tech, allowing crewmen to live however they want ut, instead of being confined to poor designed quarters.
