Holo-TV & ‘true 3D’ in-the-round broadcasts

The holographic images would be captured from 360 degrees by 200 high-definition cameras
the Holo-TV’s will resemble a large book laid out on the floor. Lasers will then project a series of images that will appear to float in the middle of the platform and can be viewed from every angle without the need for 3D glasses.

Around 2020-2025
While that is too many cameras and too far down the road
Today it was announced
BBC Research & Technology has carried out one of the largest experimental broadcasts
The project, designed to help demonstrate to BBC Sport the technologies that will be available at the time of the 2012 Olympics,
Around the studio was a fixed ring of a dozen HD cameras that allows the action to be shot in ‘true 3D’ from multiple angles. The content is being processed by the BBC 3D4You project
also they tested the system that should be broadcasting in 2015-2020:
NHK Super Hi-vision camera were displayed around the studio on 4k (4000 horizontal lines resolution) monitors. Even though these were the highest definition monitors available to the BBC team, the pictures still needed to be downscaled.

Holo-TV & ‘true 3D’ from 12 cameras sound like a in-the-round experience for a sport played in a box or field (all sports except a road car racing track).

It sounds like 2012 Olympics should allow more than just 3-D broadcasts on 3-D capable HDTVs.

Let's talk about not the 2012 Olympics but the broadcasting future in 15 years or so.
What do you guys think will be the more popular broadcast in 15 years?
Super Hi-vision/8k Ultra HD (not downsampled to 4k)
or some sort of in-the-round 'true 3D' projection in a room?
Costs aside I think what would give sports fans a better game would be the 'true 3D' type of projection. It would also work for live-action theatre in-the-round type plays and possibly opera.
To see this type of in-the-round projection I can see it being installed in a in-the-round type of theatre with seating on 3 or 4 sides. The other upside is these same audience venue could have 2-D movies on a screen.

In 15-20 years we will be watching TV and sports much in the same way we are now. The type of 3D that is offered today is just a trick that the brain and eyes can't fully process. Human stereoscopic vision only extends to a few meters. It was never meant to be tricked into seeing 3D images on a screen. A "Holo TV" as described in the article is decades away from true usability. Even then this type of broadcast would only be usable for sports or maybe videogames. The UltraHD style of broadcast is also a pipe dream for the near future. The biggest bottleneck right now is bandwidth. There is no way the country will be wired for the 180-600mpbs stream it will take.
