Hole in one

The cliff that Kirk's car went off of. What was that? A remnant of a past nulcear war? Earthquake? Or is that a real thing up there in Iowa, a giant tear in the ground.

What was that hole???

Rob

Re: HOLE...in one!

Folks here familiar with Iowa say, yes, there are in fact a few huge quarries there. Same here in Virginia.

The hole left when The Old-Skool TOS fans, who didn't like this film, ate their souls out from sheer spite.

We have quarry's out here in california. But not like those. That one in the movie looked pretty deep. I'll have to go see one just for the hell of it. I'll be out that way later this summer. I'll put it on my list of things to do.

Re: HOLE...in one!

^Some of the quarries here in Virginia can be VERY deep and VERY dangerous. It's really quite awful to see these horrendous man-made gouges in the earth. Especially knowing that kids are going to be driving antique cars into them.

In retrospect, that did look like a granite quarry. Makes sense it was really in New England. It had that look. The quarry near where I grew up in Iowa was nothing like that. It was (is) limestone. Minnesota has granite quarries. Don't know if Iowa has.

Hmm. Bakersfield, CA and Graniteville, VT passing for Iowa. Fascinating. You know, J.J., Iowans would've welcomed your crew with open arms. So what's the deal?

Maybe he was skeer'd the people of Riverside might still be holding a grudge against Shat for doing that Punked mimi series that he pulled on them and that they would take it out on him instead. :guffaw:

Seriously though, the people of Riverside had it pretty lucky. The suits at Paramount chartered two coaches and a limo and brought a bunch of them to Cedar Rapids for a free pre-screening the day before the movie opened.

And yeah Rob, we got some of them big ditches 'round these parts.

It was the future site of the ship yard where the Enterprise would one day be built.

(You'll notice that it is clearly not a natural cliff. You can see the perfectly straight sides that line much of it. It's obviously artificial.)

I from MA and my home town (Milford) has alot of quarries like that for granite, so when I saw it in the film I did not think anything of it. Alot of the older quarries have water in them that we use to swin in as teenagers long ago and there are even some with cars (this is a fact) at the bottom under the water.
