Suit-lovers protest opening of Abercrombie & Fitch in Savile Row.

Story

I dunno, the crowd's taste doesn't look colorful enough to me to fit Holdfast's style.

^I love that a photo that includes a guy in an ascot holding a riding crop isn't deemed "colorful" enough to include Holdfast.

No, but I actually did hear about it in advance.

My langour is such that I don't "do" street protest... especially where banjos may be playing... :p

I highly approve of the "Give (Three-)Piece a Chance" pun, however.

I'm not particularly fond of the ensembles on the three guys on the front row, but the gentlemen on the far right? Totally bitchin'.

On a serious note, it's not surprising that A&F and other similar stores want to move into Savile Row; the rents are astronomical, making it very hard for the more traditional houses to maintain a presence. But the address' historical cachet is very appealing to large international brands that can afford those rents. This pressure has the effect of pushing bespoke suit prices at the older houses up every year, by more than inflation, which is a bit annoying.

By the way, I'd be willing to bet that at least 2/3rds of the suits people in the crowd are wearing in the pic aren't bespoke (or at least, not for the people currently wearing them), and many are just costumes from what I can see, so what they're protesting about escapes me on one level...

... and on another level, if all the traditional tailors moved to a less expensive address (which, in fact, was part of the historic reason that Savile Row became a tailoring centre in the first place IIRC), the annual price rises might be mitigated a bit, which on a personal level, would be no bad thing. So put me in the "mixed feelings" camp when it comes to A&F on Savile Row.

the guy with the banjo needs to be held down and shaved. he looks like an ass.

the guy with the riding crop needs to be held down and saved and given a goddamn haircut

Now I've got that song from Annie stuck in my head.

Remember, you're never fully dressed without a smile!

Unless you're commanding the prototype USS Excelsior there's no need to have a riding crop in modern society.

;)
