His war is over. (John Hurt 1940-2017)

RIP John Hurt.

You were monumental and I can remember you from so many roles and movies.

Alien
Spaceballs
Elephant Man
Hellboy
V for Vendetta
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Doctor Who
Harry Potter
The Lord of the Rings (Baski)
The Plague Dogs
and many more.

Damn, what a terrible lost. To say he was an icon doesn't do him justice. He'll be greatly missed. :(

A CBE truly deserving to be called Sir John. What a great talent.

This year is shaping up to be just as bad as the last one.

Damn, this is terrible. Though, truthfully not completely surprising given he had pancreatic cancer, which is one of the worst cancers out there and in most cases a diagnosis is essentially a death sentence. Still, considering his diagnosis was in June 2015, to have lasted a year and a half after being diagnosed with it is quite an accomplishment. Shit, I was only just thinking about John Hurt the other day and wondering how he was doing. This is not the news I wanted.

Still, the man's contributions to cinema are extensive and well known. And while the War Doctor has been a point of contention among fandom, I think we all have agreed that whatever issues the existence of the character have created, John Hurt provided an excellent performance with the role, and if for no other reason the existence of the War Doctor is justified as it gave us the opportunity for John Hurt to be the Doctor.

A fine British actor. Even in his smaller roles he brought an extra gravitas to the screen.

Sad, but not unexpected.

It appears he finished his Time War series for Big Finish, as the final set is out next month. Hopefully there aren't to many hanging storylines that can't be resolved elsewhere.

I always said he was better than the material he was given, almost all of the time. Not an exception with the War Doctor, who was very flimsly written but under Hurt, was actually a rich performance filled with detail that only Hurt could fill. He literally bettered the character with his performance.

I'm genuinely sad to hear about his passing, as he's my favorite English perfomer. RIP, John Hurt.

My favorite John Hurt story.

Hurt was the witness to the infamous guitar duel between George Harrison and Eric Clapton over who would "get" Pattie Boyd. (Harrison was married to Boyd, Clapton was madly in love with her -- see "Layla.")

I am gutted by his passing. Gutted in ways that I was not when Leonard Nimoy died. I wasn't shaken, merely sad, by the deaths of David Bowie and Prince, and I feel shaken by Hurt's death in the way that friends and colleagues were shaken by the loss of Bowie and Prince. I loved and admired Hurt as an actor and a personality for over thirty years. The pain in this one runs deep with me.

Very sad. I had the privilege and honor of meeting him at Gallifrey One less than a year ago. It might've been the only DW convention he did, I'm not sure. Very nice man. He told us how he was originally going to turn down the role of the War Doctor down, but his wife told him he was going to take it! We thanked her for that!

Nothing will die. The stream flows, the wind blows, the cloud fleets, the heart beats. Nothing will die.

Such sad news, and it was only the other day I was watching The Day of the Doctor. Such a great actor, and he felt he was an Irishman too. :)
