Hirogen

Tino

Captain
Captain
I just finished the
second Star Trek: Destiny novel
and was wondering why the Hirogen were enemies. Didn't Janeway kinda make a peace treaty/agreement with them? Wouldn't they recognize Starfleet ships?

Furthermore, I thought that part was rather unnecessary. The story didn't evolve much and it seemed like a lame try to add some conflict for the otherwise
too quick return of the Enterprise and the Aventine back to the Azure Nebula
.

I think your post is missing words.

I'm no Voyager expert, but it seems to me the Hirogen weren't really into the whole centralized authority thing. And I think (without going back and checking) the Hirogen you're asking about were outside their normal territory, and perhaps not so aware of the encounters two years earlier.

I doubt VOY could have made an agreement with *all* Hirogen, spread out and fight-y as they are. Also, the VOY was a different class of ship, so at first glance, they may not have known it was Federation, they look similar I guess. And then maybe something would be VOY + Hirogen... but that wouldn't permanently encompass the Federation.

Plus, I thought their return to the A. Neb. was well explained, and they seemed to have streamlined the system of getthing the passages opened.

Besides, bad stuff was bound to happen when you're blindly traveling tubes in space.

If I remember correctly, she made a tentative treaty or maybe that's too strong a word...a cease fire would probably be more correct in 'Killing Game', but then she or rather both parties broke it in 'Flesh and Blood'.

I don't think there was much love lost on either side.

Bill's right -- when dealing with a nomadic society without a central state, the only treaties you can make are with individual bands. The only thing Janeway achieved in "The Killing Game" was a cease-fire between Voyager and that particular group of Hirogen, and a gift of technology that might, in the long term, disseminate among the Hirogen and allow them to sublimate their predatory ways.

I forgot about the Hirogen beeing split into many groups. So thanks for the reminder and the explanations.

However, did you get the impression that the Hirogen hunt EVERYTHING without even knowing what it is? It seemed a little forced, going from the intelligent hunters to agressive mindless killing machines.

I wouldn't call them "mindless" killing machines. From what we know of them, they seem exceptionally adaptable to each prey and the fact that they went after Aventine and Enterprise with out any prior knowledge of who or what they were after a challenge; possibly their example of extreme sports.

True. So it seems I'm the only one that has trouble with that scene. So be it. ;-)

Well, I had a *little* trouble with the scene, until the third book indicated exactly why that sequence was in there (to my mind, at least).

Good to know. So I better start reading the third novel at last.
I guess that means I have to cut short my girl-time to find more time for reading. :rommie:
