My 20th is seven years away

I suspect it won't be worth it, since my alma mater would be celebrating it's 200th anniversary the year before. It is expected to be a great big celebration and people from throughout the decades.

Besides, too many from my class (smart and sharp enough to organize a reunion) won't want to plan it, especially since most of them don't live anywhere near our old school.

I can't wait to go to my 10-year high school reunion in.... *counts* 12 years.

But really, I don't think my school would work like that. The gifted program of my school is sizable but likes to stay kind of separate from the school itself, and while the number of graduates each year is growing, from the gifted program alone, two years ago, we had 6 graduates, and this last year we had 17 graduates. I imagine our reunion would be of everyone who ever graduated from the program [which only started, really, 6 years ago or so]. But since we are almost all pretty much nerds and geeks anyway of like-minded nature, I think I'd quite look forward to a reunion one day, actually, despite the availability of digital communication. We don't see each other in person often anyway.

I just can't wrap my head around the idea that FB is considered a substitute for actual in person conversation. I went to my 25 year reunion last November and "re-met" people I'd grown up with. The girl who was the first to have a bad (now I recognize, entirely fictional) reputation spent some time as a Wiccan priestess and is now a minister. Listening to her journey was fascinating. I met spouses who were, in their own right, interesting to talk to. I networked and gathered business cards. I got some inside dish on the movie made out of a classmate's book.

Then I went my husband's 30th. I met people in fields close to mine and had really great conversations.

None of that would have been available to me strictly on FB.

And to the worry that you weren't part of the gang in high school, so why go? Really it's about perspective. Your world is now bigger than your high school class, and so is your world view. The people who vandalized my stuff and wrote racial slurs all over my locker have probably met a couple or three more black people since 1985 and have grown. I'm not the same person I was either. The potential for new, great relationships is right there -- but not if you assume everyone is static and don't go.

I forgot sometimes how much bigger US schools are - there were less than 60 people in my school year. You had to die to not be part of the gang!

I read from a former classmate's post on FB that she counted only 165 people in our class. I'm pretty sure it was more than that. I lived in a small suburban community, but the school probably had close to 1,000 students at the time.

Back in 2000, my HS held an "All Years" reunion at the fairgrounds in which every graduate was allowed to attend (I'd graduated 1 year early thanks to religiously going to summer school to shorten the misery) It was fun to meet some of my old friends some who graduated earlier or latter than I did (including some old S.Os)...and compare lives..I actually was amongst the most traveled..though far from the most successful. In any case, my curiousity has been satisfied, and I probably won't attend another..

Eh, it just depends on the school and the town you're in. I know plenty of people who had 40-50 people in their graduating class.

Of course, I had over 800 people in mine, so there ya go. My high school was bigger than my college!
