We were discussing this on another thread - we think it's a Klingon disrupter - the phaser is seen briefly (in the fight between Spock and Kirk).

Yeah I was thinking that it was a Klingon disrupter, but with all the changes..who knows

It's startling just how good looking the Enterprise is in the movie, considering how "just okay" it was in that still released last week (and that was according to some of us who liked it. Obviously lots of folks disliked it altogether).
Some weeks ago Abrams said that his concern for not releasing things early was that so many things are best seen in the context of the movie rather than as outtakes or production designs or candid shots. I guess this is one example.
It's startling just how good looking the Enterprise is in the movie, considering how "just okay" it was in that still released last week (and that was according to some of us who liked it. Obviously lots of folks disliked it altogether).

I think Abrams intentionally released the most unflattering photos of the ship and bridge on purpose, just so we'd go "that ain't bad!" when we saw the trailer.

Again I am still not a fan of the ship or the bridge, again that is me. If you like that it, thats cool. I am not one to say that anyone is wrong. Like I have said over and over, if you want to go see the movie, please go and have fun, that what movies are for.
For me that front shot that I posted, the pylons are too togerther, I think that they should be apart more. I see in photo 38 that the Kelvin Nacelle (The back part) in that shot it looks like heat exhaust, now it could be from that huge fireball in the back gound,but I hope its not heat exhaust from the nacelle.

TK421 I not trying to pick on you, but sorry that is not a good detail, the back of the nacelle should not make heat. For me they are saying that the nacelle is a huge car type air fighter type engine.
The shot I posted shows that, I am guessing that its the the huge explosion is the back ground that cause that. Gene R, made it very clear that the nacelle should not have "flames or exhaust" coming from the back of them. I am sure that you can't see heat vapor in space..so..I do not know what to say.

It could be thermal exhaust, not for propulsive purposes.
As for the heat distortion...I caught that too, and I guess it's just a conceit of sci-fi visual effects these days, as lots of shows an movies use it in space.

I'm still not a fan of the new nacelles, but I'll admit that the Enterprise does look better in the trailer then in the still pics.
