Hidden Frontier

When the guidelines first hit and we didn't know if existing fan films were going to be pulled, I began watching through Trek fan films. After Continues, New Voyages, Horizon, Of Gods and Men, Renegades, Exeter and the rest, I came to one series I'd avoided for years due to it's fuzzy greenscreen and homemade uniforms - Hidden Frontier. It started off very weak, but it came in easily digestible 30-minute episodes and so I stuck with it. Soon I was hooked. The acting and writing improved more and more. And it goes on forever - 50ish main episodes, spin-off series', an Intrepid crossover and audios.

Definitely worth a look.

Hidden Frontier pretty much kicked off the current crop of internet Star Trek fanfilms. The people who made it were also a class act.

I'd like to see a reunion one of these days.

Me too. I think HF was unique, especially from Season 6 onwards, in properly presenting top class character and story arcs you could actually follow. The characters were well written and developed, I agree Nick a reunion of sorts would be grand. I ignored Enterprise when it first aired so HF replaced it for me, the 24th C continuation with Intrepid firmly established in their continuity as well.

Plus of course, before Blood & Fire, Beyond or Discovery it was the first Star Trek to feature gay characters.

The first several seasons are pretty rough/hard to watch (understandably), but it sure as heck got good. Very layered writing for a fan film series and the performances got better and better. Without any spoilers, the Welsh doctor from Odyssey was particularly good and produced the most (to my eyes) authentically emotional moment of any of the HF series.

I spoke to Rob about a reunion last year, and while he was certainly willing, if it were to happen it's not likely to be any time soon.

Aster, Dao and Nevin all returned over a year ago ;)

What happened to HF, anyway? It was going strong and then just... stopped. Everything went audio, Rob stopped being an active part of most of his shows, and everything just slowly petered out. Was it a money thing?

It was a life thing, as I understood it. Fantastic as it was to watch (especially the later seasons), Real Life started getting in the way, as well as the desire to do other stuff. I'm glad they stuck through to give the "franchise" one good movie to tie up so much of the stories - and to do it well, IMO.

Basically what Mark Said. Real life got in the way.

I know there's a willingness on most of the principles to do a reunion if at all possible. Whether that will ever happen is another matter, but you never know.

Hidden Frontier was what really hooked me on fan films. I had watched Phase 2 once or twice but the idea of having a story arc really grabbed me. Like other said it really hit it's stride during it's final couple of seasons...damn shame that real life got in the way of what had become the little fan show that really got Star Trek.

That's was what I loved about HF. They constantly improved their game, ran for seven? Seasons, and ran with story and character arcs. Two spin offs to boot, and crossovers with Intrepid as well.:cool::cool::cool:

I take it real life also got in the way of their own SF space academy series, the name of which escapes me at present?

That's it! Thank you Karzak!:techman::cool:

I'd love to know the story on how HF and Intrepid started their crossovers. Loved the banter between Hunter and Shelby!
Thanks, glad you liked it. That was always fun for me.

Basically we got to chatting to Rob and he thought it was a neat idea. The original actor we had for Azhan appeared on HF first, though I think Rob shot the Shelby scenes prior to that. Basically just a case of we asked and they were kind enough to agree.

I'd never even heard of Frontier Guard until now. And I thought the HF universe was already massive!

EDIT: Ah, it's their own original universe. Still checking it out!

I loved Hidden Frontier! It was a little sketchy at the beginning, but that's really just teething problems. They went on to tell some great stories. Plus they managed to do a same-sex storyline and the universe didn't come to an end, so it can be done!

Think I might have to have a youtube binge sometime soon.
