Gathering some data from various geek places on the internet. If you would be so kind as to take the poll and comment if you want, Sociology will be oh, so pleased. :)

The question is on how you are online as opposed to in face to face interactions. And by this, I mean on average, as in how would most people answer this question about you?

I voted for being the same - allowing, of course, for the fact that I am not, in real life, a small pink elephant.

The way I am is similar. Not literally the same, but not dissimilar. I wasn't sure if I should pick 1 or 3. I think I'm mostly the same, but I certainly am willing to express my opinion more online. This does not have to do with some advantage of anonymity (which is often speculated as a reason), but more to do with the fact that threads solicit my thoughts, so I'm more willing to give them without thinking I'm sticking my neck out too far.

I don't say anything online I wouldn't say to somebody's face. I'm generally a kind and easy-going person and I think my 'online persona' reflects that. Consequently, my real name and place of employment are easily found online and I have no cause for concern.

Very much the same person. My online identity has always existed to reflect who I am in real life, not to mark or change it somehow.

I'm very similar online to the RL me as well. I think I'm a bit more footloose and outspoken on the 'net, but that's mainly because I know many more people like myself online than in RL. Heck, I can be myself more online than in many RL situations, come to think of it.

My personality and spirit are the same, and just as I do in real life, there are certainly things that are private to me and that I won't easily share online. I have a whole lot of good acquaintances, but few precious friends.

I'm mostly the same here as I am IRL, just perhaps a little more outspoken and direct here than IRL.

It would be interesting to see a study in which people's online behaviour was monitored and then compared to how they answered this poll. I suspect the results would not entirely match up.

I'm generally the same person on the internet as I am in real life, though a little more talkative and outspoken.

I'm more of an asshole in real life. I'm much nicer here. Those who have met me will undoubtedly agree.

I try to be polite, kind and courteous on line even in the face of impolite behavior. I know the anonymity of net does allow some people to act differently than they would off of the computer but I couldn't live with myself if I did that.

As a therapist I am curious if you are an asshole more in real life I have to wonder why? You must find that being that ways serves you in a positive manner.

I'm more reserved online generally than I am in person, but I guess that depends on who I'm talking to in person. I find, on here at least, I tend to be more careful about what I say or whether or not I respond at all. In person, I'm a bit more of a motormouth :p Might be because I find it easier to gauge other people in person rather than text on a screen (or whole groups online, which may be the actual reason online I'm quiet, I don't know who'll be responding to me).

i'm more inclined to call people a twat or whatever in real life than on here, since i keep getting warnings. seriously, if someone's being a twat, you should be able to call them on it...

In general, I find people to be annoying. By being an asshole, it gets me out of situations I'd rather not be in. Such as being around annoying people.

For every decent person (say, Toronto Trekker), there are about 20,000 people I'd want to use a machete on.

And regardless of what the porn set in prisons might say, I'd much rather be on the outside than in.

So asshole = no killings. Bonus for everyone.
