I am in the process of outlining a fan-fiction project that occurs after the Dominion War in the year 2375 in which my characters operate an Intrepid-class starship. I have a short-list of names, but really cannot decide on which name I like best. Which name do you like the best?

U.S.S. Mariner would be named for the space probes Mariner 9 and Mariner 10.

U.S.S. Sojourner would be named for the rover Sojourner part of the Mars Pathfinder mission.

U.S.S. Pioneer would be named for the space probes Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11.

U.S.S. Renown would be named for the Royal Navy battlecruiser HMS Renown.

U.S.S. Astute would be named for the Royal Navy nuclear-powered attack submarine HMS Astute.

U.S.S. Ranger would be named for the United States Navy ships named U.S.S. Ranger.

U.S.S. Undaunted would be named for the Royal Navy ships named HMS Undaunted.

U.S.S. Daring would be named for the Royal Navy ships named HMS Daring.

U.S.S. Splendid would be named for the Royal Navy ships named HMS Splendid.

U.S.S. Superb would be named for the Royal Navy ships named HMS Superb.

U.S.S. Indefatigable would be named for the ship made famous by author C.S. Forrester in his Horatio Hornblower series of books and the Royal Navy ships of the same name.

U.S.S. Investigator would be named for HMS Investigator the first ship to circumnavigate Australia.

I'm voting Sojourner mainly because it fits into the Voyager ethos. Of course it may well be that due to the Dominion War, ships began to bear more martial names.

Meh, I've voted :)

From those I like the sound of Sojourner best. However I don't think it is a good name for a starship. Its meaning being somebody who stays in one place for a while like, e.g. the Mars rover.

I like Ranger and Pioneer but I'm sure both are quite common. Indefatigable is a nice name, but a mouth full.

I do like Astute and to a lesser degree, Daring. They roll off the tongue and inspire confidence and competency.

To keep in line with Voyager's name "travel" theme and space probes reference, Mariner and Pioneer seem the most appropriate.

Intrepid Voyager, Intrepid Mariner, Intrepid Pioneer. They all sound fine and meaningful.

I voted for Indefatigable. Not so much because of the Hornblower books, but because it's a strong but also fairly neutral-sounding name that wouldn't be too out of place for an Intrepid-class ship that can be assigned to a wide variety of missions from defense to intelligence-gathering to even routine logistical operations, IMO.

Sojourner probably is the best one go with for an Intrepid-class ship. It does have a Voyager feel. However, I like Daring, Ranger, Mariner, and Investigator too. Pioneer is a name I've seen for other fan-fic series (granted that shouldn't stop you if you really like it). In essence you've got a lot of good choices here, so I don't think you can go wrong whatever you pick.

You name a ship based on the name of the first in the class (Intrepid), not the one that's most famous (Voyager).

Undaunted and Daring are the best names.

Pioneer would seem to capture the spirit of a starship exploring uncharted space perfectly.

Although how Investigator made it onto your short-list I'll never know, it's horrendous.

"This is the USS Investigator..."

Terrible.

Like I said, based on the first ship's name.

Intrepid
Indefatigable
Investigator

On the right track, anyway...

Good to know that the name provoked this reaction. Like I said above, U.S.S. Investigator would have been named for HMS Investigator, the first ship to circumnavigate Australia.

Yes, you've already said.

Voted for Mariner, both because I like the link to other space probes and as a lampshade of Star Trek's tendency to lean on the "Space Is An Ocean" trope.
