Would the USS Carol Marcus have the motto: "Can I cook, or can't I?"I also like the Marcus suggestion. Ship's motto: "Scientists are always pawns of the military."![]()

Agreed. Some science vessels can also double as deep-space exploration vessels, scout ships, or even tactical intelligence-gathering vessels in a pinch. I've seen the name Pathfinder used for a Nova-class science ship in at least a half-dozen fanfics here and there...You may want to go a different way and not name it after a scientist. Just a thought.
The ship will look like this John Eaves design: http://i42.tinypic.com/2e6g3sl.jpgI'd go a bit non-contemporary for a 2380's to 24XX period science vessel. Tell me more about the ship. Is it a variant / retrofit / kitbash / Starfleet Museum "Mothball Fleet" relaunch of a known canon vessel?
Tell me more about this fan fic you're setting-up
I think you may have misunderstood. Although John Eaves designed it to be a holoship concept for Insurrection, I'm pretending the class was specifically designed to be a science vessel a few decades after TNG. So it's not about reconstructing a holoship to be a science vessel or anything like that. Unless you meant the Oberths could be upgraded. But I tend to think after 120 years (the Oberths were in service as early as the 2280s), their inneficiencies and heavy maintenance requirements would warrant outright replacement with more state-of-the-art hardware.kitsune: Just from a technical standpoint, wouldn't it be easier to salvage an older vessel with as little necessary new construction as possible?
I expect Starfleet to resume exploratory projects by that time, and the Oberths will likely be on their last legs by then and badly in need of replacing.Especially after the pasting all the races / powers took from The Dominion?
It won't be armed as well as a heavy cruiser.Plus, it makes sense from a (low probability) of First Contact perspective. You're a hundred times less likely to piss off the neighbors if you're not bristling with "All Good Things" style tech.
The da Vinci would more likely be called Leonardo. da Vinci just means "from Vinci".Did I miss it? or has no said the USS Edison? or the USS da Vinci?
