Help me name a Starfleet science vessel

I can't remember the last names: U.S.S. Sheldon, or U.S.S. Leonard, or U.S.S. Cuthrapali(sp?)

You may want to go a different way and not name it after a scientist. Just a thought.
Agreed. Some science vessels can also double as deep-space exploration vessels, scout ships, or even tactical intelligence-gathering vessels in a pinch. I've seen the name Pathfinder used for a Nova-class science ship in at least a half-dozen fanfics here and there...

My suggestions:
USS Lucasian (And no, it isn't named after George Lucas for any lil' Jedi out there)
USS Farsight
USS Telescope (yes, I'm serious)
USS Outrider
USS Hubble

I'd go a bit non-contemporary for a 2380's to 24XX period science vessel. Tell me more about the ship. Is it a variant / retrofit / kitbash / Starfleet Museum "Mothball Fleet" relaunch of a known canon vessel?

  • U.S.S. Nairobi
  • U.S.S. Kenya
  • U.S.S. Vonnegut
  • U.S.S. Damascus
  • U.S.S. Israel
  • U.S.S. Geneva
  • U.S.S. Oslo (as in "The Oslo Accords".)
  • U.S.S. Mandela

Tell me more about this fan fic you're setting-up

The ship will look like this John Eaves design: http://i42.tinypic.com/2e6g3sl.jpg

It will be a newly-built vessel, similar to Oberth and Nova classes in purpose.

I plan to edit the drawing to have a higher registry number, more escape pods, and larger windows to be consistent with the size of the escape pods.

The crew complement will probably be in the 100 range, including a few families and civilian scientists.

kitsune: Just from a technical standpoint, wouldn't it be easier to salvage an older vessel with as little necessary new construction as possible? Especially after the pasting all the races / powers took from The Dominion?

I wouldn't go with a new ship, personally. John Eaves ~is~ amazing, I personally worship the guy (right along with Atolm of SciFi-Meshes.Com)

But in this instance, I'd go with a salvaged starship. The Federation & the Alpha Quadrant Alliance needs personnel, eyes and ears out there on the frontier, protecting colonies on all sides of the old "Neutral Zones" ASAP.

Brand new ships just aren't cost effective that way, time or material-wise in lean times.

I'd go with a TMP-era ship with upgraded amenities (holosuites, diplomatic rating, readjusted warp scale, replicators, LCARS, et al.)

My recommendation is a 'Loknar II-Class' (see 'U.S.S. Phobos' by Kevin Riley) or an upgraded 'Bonaventure-Class'.

Plus, it makes sense from a (low probability) of First Contact perspective. You're a hundred times less likely to piss off the neighbors if you're not bristling with "All Good Things" style tech.

How about:

U.S.S. Asimov
U.S.S. Brahms
U.S.S. Schmitt (first Scientist on the Moon)
U.S.S. McAuliff (First Teacher in Astronaut corps, died in the Challenger accident.)

I think you may have misunderstood. Although John Eaves designed it to be a holoship concept for Insurrection, I'm pretending the class was specifically designed to be a science vessel a few decades after TNG. So it's not about reconstructing a holoship to be a science vessel or anything like that. Unless you meant the Oberths could be upgraded. But I tend to think after 120 years (the Oberths were in service as early as the 2280s), their inneficiencies and heavy maintenance requirements would warrant outright replacement with more state-of-the-art hardware.

Especially after the pasting all the races / powers took from The Dominion?
I expect Starfleet to resume exploratory projects by that time, and the Oberths will likely be on their last legs by then and badly in need of replacing.

It won't be armed as well as a heavy cruiser. :) Just dinky little phasor strips. It will have far more probes aboard than torpedoes.

You could always just make up a fictional scientist, too. Maybe the first Vulcan to break the warp barrier, or the first Andorian to prove gravity's existence, etc. Or just a human scientist who emerged after the 20th or 21st century.
