Help me figure out this possible reference in TOS...

Core

Ensign
Red Shirt
Ok, gotta bring this one to the experts, 'cause this is driving me nuts.

I have this image in the back of my mind of Kirk talking (in TOS) about a starship captain (now deceased) he idolized when he was younger, or studied in the academy, or something to that effect.

I kept thinking it was Archer, but after some Google searches, I doubt it. I could've sworn this is something I saw him talk about in TOS, but I can't pinpoint it. Maybe I've got the wrong series AND character? :borg:

You're probably thinking of Captain Garth in "Whom Gods Destroy". From Memory Alpha:

Captain Garth of Izar's exploits were required reading for cadets, and the famous captain joined Kirk's pantheon of heroes.

The reference to Garth of Izar was what immediately sprung to my mind. From Whom Gods Destroy ...

CORY: Garth. Garth of Izar, a former Starship fleet Captain. (He calls up a picture on a monitor)
KIRK: When I was a cadet at the Academy, his exploits were required reading. He was one of my heroes. I'd like to see him.
CORY: Of course.

EDIT: Damn, too slow. :(

Hmmm... The only two I can think of are:
Instructor John Gill (Patterns of Force)
Captain Garth (Whom Gods Destroy)

From the episode "Whom Gods Destroy:"

Kirk: Who is the new inmate?

Cory: Uh, Garth. Garth of Izar, a former star ship fleet captain.

Kirk: When I was a cadet at the academy, his exploits were required reading. He was one of my heroes. I'd like to see him.

Cory: Of course.

Ed: Man--everyone is so fast!

That's LORD Garth!!

And was Yvonne Craig hot, or what? You know what they say: Once you've had green, everything else is routine!

He did his share of saving the day and managed to lay the ground work for the UFP. I got no problem with Archer.
