Help! Is my computer dying?!

If I were you, I would back up any critical files while you still can, and start shopping for another computer (not a Dell.) Your problem is the exact same as the problem I had with both of my Dell systems, my friends' 2 Dell computers, and another friends' Dell computer. Eventually your computer will never boot again. If you are lucky you might have a month or two before it dies completely. If you install any programs or updates that require you to reboot, I guarantee that you will encounter this problem again, and again. You may have to try booting it multiple times before it decides to work. One day it will just never boot again. There has to be some kind of flaw in the components used. I saw 5 computers, all from Dell. Die in the exact same manner that you are describing.

What made me think it was the pwer supply was one of my PCs was going the same way. And curiously, I left it turned off for a couple of days, powered it up, it chuntered for a bit, and has been running fine since, thought I specifically haven't turned it off. But working fine. The power supply is a weird shape, so getting a replacement one is proving tricky and possibly expensive.

Thanks, all. Sparky, I know my XPS isn't going to last forever, which is why I back up my files (music, photos, other documents) all the time on an external hard drive. I'm really on a budget right now and would like to hold off as much as possible on buying a new system.

Oops! It did it again. Sparky had a good point about this happening again. For now, I just unplugged the PC and will try again in a couple of days. Before this happened, I heard a long weird beeping sound coming from the tower. I stopped to see if I left something sitting on the keyboard, but no. The machine shut down and restarted automatically. Then I decided to turn it off.
