HELLCATS is a coming-of-age story about Marti Perkins (Aly Michalka, "The Roommate," "Bandslam"), a pre-law scholarship student at Lancer University in Memphis, Tennessee. Marti is a hip, edgy townie with working class roots, whose world flips upside down, literally and figuratively, when her scholarship is cancelled and her well-meaning but irresponsible mother, Wanda (Gail O'Grady, "NYPD Blue," "American Dreams") neglects to inform her.

Broke and out of options, Marti realizes the only way she can stay in school is by repurposing her dormant gymnastic skills to win a place on the Hellcats – Lancer's legendary cheer squad – and the scholarship that comes with it. She had been a rising star in high school gymnastics until she abruptly quit senior year, so Marti knows she has the moves and athleticism needed for the squad. When she rocks the tryouts and "makes the mat," Marti is thrust into a world of camaraderie, backstabbing, and competition that takes place at the intersection of the Memphis music scene, backroom academia, college town politics and big money collegiate sports – in the Deep South, football is God.

Marti's new roommate, Savannah Monroe (Ashley Tisdale, "High School Musical"), is a petite, peppy Texan and captain of the Hellcats. Savannah has led a sheltered life up to this point. She was home-schooled by her strictly religious parents, but recently had a falling out with them over her newfound secular lifestyle, co-ed living arrangements and racy Hellcats outfits. Savannah's faith is still important to her, but she's also a fierce competitor, and loves her role as captain of the squad.

The fact that Savannah was chosen to be captain is a sore spot with squad member Alice Verdura (Heather Hemmens, "CSI: Miami"), who was on track to become captain until Savannah transferred in and snapped up the position, displacing Alice as the Hellcats' top flyer. Alice has a complicated past with Lewis Flynn (Robbie Jones, ("One Tree Hill"), an architecture student who gave up football at Lancer when he was disillusioned by corruption in the football program. Although he has only been cheerleading for a year, Lewis has found it to be every bit as challenging and competitive as his former sport. He has also moved on from his relationship with Alice, despite her still-strong feelings for him, and he's more than a little interested in the newest star on the squad, Marti. As if her recent injury wasn't enough, Alice sees the budding friendship between Lewis and Marti as a new cause for alarm.

Surrounded by all these new people, Marti feels lucky she can turn to one familiar face: Dan Patch (Matt Barr, "Harper's Island"), a townie who has been her best friend since first grade. Dan still lives with his large, working class family and works the docks as a machinist. Even though he's never felt the need to go to college, Dan is a budding documentary filmmaker and is never without his camera.

Overseeing all the practices and personal drama is former Hellcats star and current coach Vanessa Lodge (Sharon Leal, "Dreamgirls," "Private Practice"). Vanessa has a history with Red Raymond (Jeff Hephner, "The O.C."), the school's football coach, a history which creates conflict between Vanessa and her fiance, the Hellcats team doctor, Derek (D.B. Woodside, "24"). Vanessa's job is on the line unless the squad wins the upcoming nationals. Just like Marti, Vanessa's future is riding on the Hellcats ascending to the very top of the fiercely competitive cheerleading world.

HELLCATS is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Tom Welling Productions, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios with executive producers Kevin Murphy ("Desperate Housewives," "Reefer Madness"), Tom Welling ("Smallville") and Allan Arkush ("Heroes," "Crossing Jordan").

CW Official Description #1.1 "A World Full Of Strangers"
ALY MICHALKA (“BANDSLAM”) AND ASHLEY TISDALE (“HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL”) STAR IN A NEW COMING-OF-AGE DRAMA — Marti Perkins (Michalka), a law student at Lancer University, discovers that her scholarship has been cancelled and her well-meaning but irresponsible mother, Wanda (Gail O’Grady, “NYPD Blue,” “American Dreams”) has neglected to inform her. Broke and out of options, Marti realizes the only way she can stay in school is to win a place on the Hellcats – Lancer’s legendary cheer squad – and the scholarship that comes with it. Despite a confrontation with the Hellcats peppy team captain, Savannah (Tisdale), Marti wins over coach Vanessa Lodge (Sharon Leal, “Dreamgirls”), makes the squad and is thrust into a competitive world unlike anything she has ever known. With her best friend Dan (Matt Barr, “Harper’s Island”) by her side, Marti navigates her new world as a cheerleader and Savannah’s new roommate, while trying to avoid any interaction with squad member Alice Verdura (Heather Hemmens, “CSI: Miami”), who is instantly jealous when she realizes that Marti has caught the eye of Alice’s ex-boyfriend Lewis Flynn (Robbie Jones, “One Tree Hill”). Allan Arkush directed the episode written by Kevin Murphy (#101).

Will you be watching?

Probably not. I used to really enjoy teen/young adult dramas like 90210 back in the '90s but most of them these days are just too shallow and silly for my tastes now. They need a little bit less Paris Hilton sensibilities if they ever hope to pull me in.

^ Did you ever watch J.J. Abrams' Felicity, JOOC? From all indications (watching previews, reading info about the series, watching interviews with the cast, etc.), Hellcats has a lot more in common with that series than it does with stuff like 90210 or Gossip Girl, and I think you should at least give it (Hellcats) a look-see before dismissing it.

The extended preview is interesting...I don't know how I feel about Ashley Tisdale...I won't be watching tonight but might catch it later, next week on the CW website. I am slightly interested because Tom Welling(Clark Kent on SMALLVILLE) is an Executive Producer...he has spent a lot of time promoting it.

^ What else is Welling going to do? Make movies with Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott? :p

No explosions, in other words. In that case, unless most/all of the Hellcats are lesbians, no deal.

I watched the first ten minutes of this mainly due because I was interested in the two main female leads and immediately lost interest. Same formulaic nonsense the CW pushes in all of it's shows...kudos to those who sat through it and those who actually enjoy it, i don't see this show lasting more than a season but who knows. No longer interested. Comparing this to "Felicity" is laughable....that was an excellent show...this isn't.

I've got to respectfully disagree with you, but, as they say, 'to each their own'.

I got to see about half of the premiere before my parents asked me to turn off the television so that my siblings could do homework, but what I saw only reinforced my opinion that the show has a very 'Felicity'-esque vibe to it. It also reminds me in a lot of ways of One Tree Hill.

^
It seems like "One Tree Hill" based on the extended preview...when I see I will post my thoughts...I really enjoyed One Tree Hill up till 4-5th season or so.

Just finished watching it. Looks like I'll be sampling most of the new shows. The girls were hot. I've seen the lead before, but I can't quite place her. I'll have to check her out at the IMDb after this post. Didn't see Ben Browder. He's one of the reasons I tuned in. Didn't know it would be shooting in Vancouver either. I figured it would be when I saw a few Canadian actors in the credits. Speaking of credits, I was surprised to see Tom Welling's name under "Executive Producer". Now we know what he'll be doing after Smallville. As for the episode itself, the funniest part was when whatsherface, the lead, put in the Bring It On DVD to learn her moves, then she blew everyone away in the tryouts. And I don't mean "ha ha" funny, I mean more of a "what TV trope is that?" funny. I might check out a few more episodes before I quit.

Ben Browder is no longer apart of the show...the lead is Ashley Tisdale who is famous for the High School Musical films and her upcoming spin off from those. Aly Milekea (spelled her name wrong) is from the band with her sister formerly known as Aly and AJ and I believe she was in Phil of the Future and had a bit role in "The Lovely Bones".

How on earth are you calling Ashley Tisdale the lead? Aly Michalka is clearly the lead; nearly the entire episode revolved around her point of view.

Anyway, I only watched it because of Ben Browder. But now that I know that he's not a part of it, I doubt I'll be watching. Not my type of show; I just wanted to support Browder.

Watched it. Didn't like it. I rolled my eyes plenty of times. I'm not above shallow shows but I just can't relate to the vapidness that characterizes teen dramas and teen actors/characters these days. These shows clearly aren't for me. It probably won't last any way since it is pretty dumb even for the CW.

Tisdale is her roommate and has been promoted in pressers as one of the TWO female leads...I never said she was the main star, I said two female leads if you read my damn post properly.

^
The funny thing is in the promos all you see is Tisdale.

^ Thank you Jetfire, Aly is where the story is constructed around yes...but Tisdale is the bigger star and what the show has been promoted. Hell...this thread is tagged with Ashley and Tom Welling for crying out loud lol.
